I used to work for Dollar Rent a Car. Went out to LAX about 3 years ago with my good friend, Josh Rawlin. I had a Kia Sportage or something like that. This was before 9/11. Anyway, I'm not exactly a lightweight and I got on the roof of that SUV. Before the end of the weekend, it looked like the SUV had been hit with giant hail-stones..........thought I would be fired from my job. Not one word was ever said about it...... Smile

the pilot's Girl Friday was shooting with a panoramic disposable...After I sent them a copy of the photo she sent me a photo of me shooting her airplane. Very nice.  Smile (typically I have no way of posting it...)

As for shooting with height...I convinced my wife that I really, really, really needed an F-150 pickup truck to haul stuff for her garden. If you put a contico storage box in the back it gives you something good and solid to stand on, giving you the height to look over any fence. Also a handy place to store the beer cooler.  Smile

Good god, Sven, are your hearing still functioning after standing that close to a FM in motion? That thing, as another forum user commented in one of my TR which featured the Fouga, is only good at 2 things: Making noise & burning fuel.

As far as I know, I have not been photographed while spotting (although I think Vasco Garcia was close in that wide-angle shot from the roundabout at Heathrow), but I have photographed other spotters when they had no clue about it  Innocent  Big thumbs up

Who needs a 2X teleconverter for a 400mm lens anyway?  Big grin

Notice how no-one is looking at the FedEx A310 in the background, and they call themselves spotters!  Big thumbs up

You'd be very rich! I have a Toyota 4Runner and the car frame is really poorly built. Since I exceed the maximum roof weight allowance I feel that one day im going to break it pretty badly!

I received these via e-mail from a VIP that was on the terrace behind me. I was wearing a safety harness by Museum rules as there was no handrails to keep me from falling off. And yes, I was bundled up pretty good.

While gawking at the size of that lens (is that a 600mm prime?), I was wondering how much the 1200mm f/5.6 would cost? I read a price list once and it said some sick price-- over $110,000.00...someone tell me that's wrong!

110.000,00 is pretty accurate... they dont even make it untill you order it.

is that a 600mm prime?

Yup. It's the EF 600mm f/4.0L IS USM. It currently goes for $7,199 USD at B&H. But I don't own it.

It and the Gitzo tripod cumulatively weigh about 8,000 lbs...  Nuts

One wrong step and I thought I was going to fall through the roof.

LOL! Big grin

Sorry guys, no shots of me taking pictures that I know of, but coming back to the car thing...

Fair enough if it's your own car / Van / SUV / Pick-up, but don't the rental guys say anything about the dents in the roof?  Confused

I've often thought about buying an old transit van, fitting it with a good and sturdy roof rack with a large plywood platform on and driving that to airshows to get above the OAPs who seem to get there at Stupid-o'clock, and then nab all the best spots along the flight line, and worse still, erect large windbreaks to cordon off 'Their' area. To top it all off they then promptly fall asleep!!!!  Angry

Either that or wait for a council clearance auction and buy a cherry picker!  Acting devilish ... something tells me airshow security might have something to say about that!

Last year at Waddington I did see one enterprising bunch who brought along a Transit van loaded with Aluminium Scaffolding. Within half an hour they's erected a viewing platform 1.5 times the height of their van! Nice!

Cheers!

Standing here on a car roof would give a great impression ! What about Bill wearing his safety harness, when standing on top of a large truck driving towards the landing aircraft ...

Funny thing you should ask. I think Andy (aka Dripstick) actually has a photo of me doing just that when he visited for SeaFair. (Though no safety harness and the truck was parked...)

It was a catering truck and the driver was on his break watching all the activity at BFI. I just asked him if I could get up on the truck. He didn't care... it was his employers, not his!

I also stand on top of my van to shoot all the time… along with a bunch of the local guys at times. The trick is to stand near the windshield and will hardly be any damage  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In some of the pool photos from the IAD Air France Concorde landing you can see a bunch of us standing on the roof of the van blasting away… we got the sunlit shots and they got crap! The following was from our vantage point:

I use the roof of my 1987 Peugeot for my landing shots at LAX. The only problem I have is that my car is white so it has my footprints that are hard to get off.
