Thanks To All The Friends Helping Out!

Thu Nov 13, 2003 7:15 pm

Hi all

I am back home after my travels and had a long 16 hrs slept last night and still haven't got enough rest.

Soon you will see my 1st upload from Germany and Switzerland , you will find those places I had previously avoided to visit. Weather is just super after 3 Nov in the whole Europe Continent!

Specially thanks to Konstantin (and Vasco) in Frankfurt, for your warm hospitality, to drive us around and Fly-K let me use his tripod, yielding some good night shot at FRA deck which I enjoyed tremendously! The FRA slide convention is just unbelivable with lot of tremendous slide and I think I do very well there and already looking forward to return in 2004! Also Tim de Groot is a very nice and humble guy and him and his father Peter were next to my table, which I coudln't find a better next door (also Joe Pries too)!

Thanks to Peter S. for the ramp tour in ZRH and we went everywhere try to get jet blasted and also was a pleasure to meet Propfreak and Rolf Wallner even time is short. And Gabe Basco (thru Marlo Plate) in Tenerife, I would have no chance to get to those spotting point without you driving me and help me with Spanish!

Also to Andy Martin (and Duncan) who was in command of a flight from Mojave to Long Beach on Cessna 172....I didn't know you were in command and thought the flight is so smooth, you are such a pro! I enjoed the whole thing again even I did it one month ago! Look forward to go with you next time!

And also to you guys in LAX I met on Saturday 8 Nov , which you all saw me arrived on LH456 but landed 24R unfortunatly no good for photos. Especially Paul Paulsen, I never thought you were quite aged and thought you were in 20s! Your great night shot inspired me a lot and the next 2 nights we went over the car park to try to get close to your quality, thanks letting me copy the style  Big grin and also to other guys hung out that day Mike Carter for the ladder, Jay and Tim from PHX, Clovis, Mike A, Josh M, Jason, and Mike and Carlos from NY. Sorry I was very tired that I can only stay a wake for 1 hr on the hill and had to head back hotel to rest. I desperatly need to lose a few pound to get more fit to travel next time!

Soon will get my photos uploaded with 200,000 views as my aim in one month! (Art!) Big grin

Hi Sam,

First of all let me say what a pleasure it was to meet you, and like you, I had expected someone entirely different. But never the less, that what life is all about, unexpected surprises. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

And even though our ages are quite far apart we still have the same minds eye for aviation photography. As you, if I see a photographers photos that particularly move me, I will try to emulate him and take it one step higher. For me that one photographer was Chris Sheldon. Over two years ago I caught a glimpse of his work here at the A. net. That was all it took, I knew I wanted to create pictures just like Chris, or at least try. He was good enough to help me out by providing me with all the info I needed to get started. Thanks Chris for all the help.

It was also a pleasure to meet Andy Martin, Carlos Borda, and Michael McLaughlin that day. I only regret that the weather was so bad. But I know that you guys more than made up for it with the good conditions we had on Monday and Tuesday.

Also in attendance that day were my good friends from Phoenix, Jay Piboontum, and Tim Keeney. I'm looking forward to the upcoming winter weekends. I'll cross my fingers for good weather! Plus all the locals, Clovis Bouhier, (my shooting partner) Michael Carter, Jason Beheshti, Josh May, and Michael Arcellana. Let's hope that we can recreate this memorable get together once again real soon. Smile

Hey Sam:

It was terrific to see and get to hang-out with you that day; also same to you Andy. Man... I feel for you staying up 16 hours straight. I can't believe you went back to take a short nap and got up again to spot at night. You are a machine Sam!!!  Smile  Smile  Smile.

Well hopefully the weather will co-operate more when you arrive into LAX next time. I am glad you have to the chance to meet our local groups. Take good care we'll sure to meet you again at LAX.

Cheers - Jay

Hey Jay

It is not 16hrs, but close to 40 hrs!  Big grin

Will be in Phoenix/LA around Dec 12, thinking to do Marana and Goodyear with my good buddy Cessna pilot. If you will be interested, we sure can take you and Tim...it is really exciting that a few days ago we did it again to VCV and MHV even saw one ex- Delta L1011 holding at the end of Rwy for takeoff clearance out of VCV!!!!!!!!!!!

It was good to meet Sam again, and to say hello to all of the LAX locals and those from further afield in the US who made the last week so enjoyable. Most involved have already been mentioned, but I'll also say thanks to a fellow a.net screener who I had an entertaining chat with over dinner one evening. Yes it was a shame about the weather Saturday, but for the most part the weather for the rest of my stay was great and it seems like I made my escape from SoCal Wednesday morning just before the real bad weather struck. As has already been mentioned, myself and Sam flew up to VCV and MHV for an aerial photo shoot, and I'd recommend that to everyone prepared to shell out the cost of 3-4 hours airplane hire as it was certainly an awesome experience even for someone used to flying GA airplanes.

My first few pics from the trip are in the queue, but unlike Sam I'll not give you a preview but will wait and allow you all to give me a few extra hits!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Andy

Sam,
Nice to see your still alive, would have thought that after 4 hours of flight with Andy you'd have died of boredom  Big grin I also hope that Andy taught you that Canon is the better brand out there.

BTW Sam read your very nice trip report, spotted an error: Carlos Border; might consider modifying that if you don't want to have some photos rejected  Wink/being sarcastic

Nice to see you guys had a nice time,

Cheers,
Tim

Sam, I'm glad you had a good time here in FRA and it was really about time to finally meet you as one of the best-known - notorious?  Big grin - a.net contributors.
I'm sure our paths will cross again soon, maybe in the US (I'll be in CA/AZ/NV/CO between Dec 6 and 13 too) or PEK.

It was sure nice to meet you as well Sam, and also exchange some beautiful slides! Although next time I'll look through your pages on the first day, when everything's still in there Big grin

FRA was a good success for me as well, although no match for your sales, still pretty good. Also I was very fortunate to have you and Hiro Murai as neighbours, Joe was hiding a little in the corner Big grin Already looking forward to next year, hopefully you are there as well in 2004!

Cheers
Tim

P.S. Like the shots from FRA, have any more from the convention?

Carlos (or someone else),
mind putting the names, though I can recognize a few it would be nice to know the whole list.

BTW, where you guys were standing on the second picture is where I got kicked off by a police woman (who had horse teeth)  Pissed, apparently I had nothing to do infront of the fence, nice to see the spot is now "kick-free".

Was also wondering if the guy who lives next to the hill still has his BMW 7 series  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Cheers,
Tim

Hi Tim,

And while at the Hill on Saturday afternoon an elderly couple walked by and started to chat wit Jay P. and myself. They told us that the gentleman who owns the BMW and three story house, donated the money to update the Imperial Hill. He also owns the mortuary just across the street to the east. So I guess he must be Mr. Douglass. Boy, there must be LOTS of money in that line of work, wouldn't you say!

Below you will find a shot that incorporates the Douglas Mortuary with a AA777 taking off. It was shot from Westchester Parkway where Lincoln Blvd. goes underneath it. (north side of the field, 24's) Small plug I know.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Damn,

Seeing the photo of all you guys, I wish I was over in LA too.
Btw Sam, I noted your BA shot linked above is no longer in queue... so I suppose it was the following (not sure because the filename is no longer kept).

Hmm... reading the comments, the shot is quite appropriate on this thread. Excellent work with the hand held shot.

Kind Regards,

Glenn, my shot of the GE 747 with tiny number two engine made it onto the database despite the heat haze - I thought it was worth a punt due to its uniqueness and it seems others agreed!  Nuts I must lead a charmed life! Big grin

Sorry I did not stick around to see you Sam, I don't shoot digitial so no point on hanging on Imperial Hill to shoot when you can't. Next time give me some heads up notice your coming.
