Help With Photo Usage!

Thu Nov 20, 2003 7:37 am

Hi there,

I have a bit of a problem. I'm sure maybe some of you have also been emailed but i'm wondering anyway, i've been asked to supply a 420mm x 280mm 300dpi scan to be published in a childrens book. By my calculations, that is an A3 print right? So how much should I rightfully be asking for? I was thinking in the region of £100...

I'm going to email back asking about the print run, amongst other things, what would you guys suggest??

Cheers

Dan

Better make sure you can supply it first...

420mm = 16.5 inches, 280mm = 11 inches
16.5 inches @ 300 ppi = 4960 pixels, 11 inches = 3300 pixels

Can you deliver a good enough image at 4960 x 3300 pixels???

Not really but thats never bothered me before!!

Its their problem if they accept the photo when i send it to them and then find out its not good enough. I've said that in the email. I haven't said anything about how much, but I have mentioned that a fee will be involved. Can never be too sure!!!! Big grin

Cheers

Don't you think it isn't too professional to provide a product that doesn't meet the customer's demands? I mean if you can't do it, then don't.

Hey good idea, i'll tell them right away!  Insane

Really though, it'll look fine, i've got some prints already at A4 and they look just as good as they do at the resolution it is here, so its not going to be much worse at A3, especially being a print run in a book.

Hmmm, a childrens book. Sounds familiar. If the guy's name is Andrew from the U.K. , he emailed me too. I emailed him that there would be fees involved and I haven't heard from hiom since. Confused I suspect he wants a freebie. Kevin

I received a similar e-mail yesterday from the same company. The original raw size of my image is only 2832x2128 pixels. Is it possible to get digital images at this size, or is this only possible from a negative film?

Ned.

Dan,

Do research into if you can provide a good quality image at A3 and also do communicate with the interested party about it.

I had a request recently wanting an image I simply couldnt not supply to the desired quality. I contacted the interested party, negotiated, we then decided on a different form of usage of the image and I got a nice pay day and they where very pleased with the quality and service.

Its important to provide a quality service to clients as it pays off in the long run.

Well, I told her that i'd have to interpolate to get the photo up to the desired size, and that it might lose a bit of quality. Its up to her I guess, I've said I can do an A4 size and I know that that will print at top quality..

She's said that she now only needs a 200mm x 120mm at 300dpi. I mean thats reasonable, I can do that so it should be ok. The print run is 10,000, so any idea what sort of fee I could ask??

Thanks,

Dan

Well if you think in terms of a centre spread in an A4 format, that would be A3.

I've had a number of shots published in children's books now - there's definitely a market.

In the end, both of them. £100 each. The versions I emailed had slightly better levels though.

Thanks guys,
