DEN Crew...up For Something This Saturday?

Thu Nov 20, 2003 1:41 pm

Hey DENers...

Alex and I were talking about possibly going to spot and shoot this Saturday at DEN and were wondering if anyone else was interested...however the only factor here is the weather...weather.com is forecasting a high of 23, low of 10 with snow and wind...however I dont know how accurate that is...and I still cant figure out Colorado weather so you long time Coloradans prolly know better than me whats really going to happen wx-wise...

Greg,
It is supposed to be nasty out this weekend. If we get a few inches of snow Friday, and then the sun comes out Sat, I would go. I won't go if it is crappy out. Not much fun. We should know more by Friday.

As for weather. If it's freezing cold, and snow on the ground and clear blue skies... you will get the sharpest, greatest shots ever, clear, and perfect lighting!

If you're not into shooting, looking is fine too, we usually bring lawn chairs out... BTW - We stay out late sometimes and in the winter, it gets COLD so bring extra coats!!!

Seriously!! bring coats! Gloves, warm shoes are also applicable.

Trust us, it gets COLD

Yeah, Definitely, Jeff knows what I'm talking about. If there's snow on the ground and a sunny clear day, you're out for the greatest pics ever!

I do shoot, but I have the most pathetic camera in the world...some pictures from Art's visit to DEN in September are on another site if you want to take a look to see how sad my camera situation is lol...

If you're planning on shooting pics, don't forget to bring lots of batteries (assuming you're not using an all-mechanical camera) and find some way to keep them warm as well. Nothing kills batteries faster than the cold.

Actually batteries are more efficient in the cold. There is however added resistance to some mechanical devices those batteries run, causing them to work harder when the temperature drops.

Actually a shunt (short) will kill a battery faster.  Big grin

I'd join you guys but I'm going to be at LAX this weekend. The wx doesn't look too good for Saturday. We're overdue for snow already this year. I hope we get some soon followed by a sunny day (on the weekend of course).

Speaking of cold temperatures I used to shoot in -10F weather when I lived in Minneapolis. I heard noises coming from my camera I've never heard before. I got more concerned that I was going to break the film. The film advance mechinism got extremely sluggish because the lubricate turned to molasses. The battery was fine. I was just worried about the impact the cold weather had on everything else.

A nice long Thanksgiving break wouldn't hurt my feelings...as in getting Mon. and Tues. off so its a full week off...but apparently the earth must be splitting open here in CO for them to cancel classes...not gonna happen I dont think  Sad

Mark,

We had a pretty decent snowfall here. I went out today with Vitaly (Vafi88) and met Hisham Atallah. It was freezing cold and light was excellent. Tomorrow I'll be shooting on the ramp.

I had a great time yesterday. I'm glad I got to meet Tim, Jeff, Alex, and Vitaly. Looking forward to meet the rest of the crew.

BTW, what do you guys think of this rejection. I wasn't expecting it.

Hisham - it was also nice meeting you out there spotting.

Unfortunately, I'm not a screener, so we can only guess what the problem is. I love the composition, the close up of the nose and the mountains in the background, everything is sharp, the only thing that caught my eye, is that it might be a bit dark on the bottom of the United plane.

If not, it sure beats me...

Great pic - BTW - out of 7 of mine, 6 got rejected and 1 is still sitting there.

Hisham,
Pleasure meeting you as well. I like the shot, maybe a bit dark on the bottom, but not overly. I would say they rejected it for not being level, or for the cropping. Or I could be completely wrong...... what was the reason?

Thanks guys,
Now that you mentioned it, I agree it's a little dark. I guess I was trying to avoid a white sky.
But they rejected it because "Either part of the aircraft is not visible on these photos or the aircraft is fully visible but not centered in the frame."

Doesn't make sense because I wanted to show the action beneath the engines and not the whole aircraft.

Hisham.
