Sigma Lens Problems W/Digital Rebel

Sat Dec 06, 2003 7:14 pm

Here is the setup I baught.

I am hearing lots of bad things about Sigma Lenses on the Digital Rebel. I am new to Digital Photography. I am wondering if it was a good idea to buy this package with these lenses or if I should seriously consider spending a lot more money on higher quality lenses.

Anyone else buy this setup?

Thanks, I will appreciate any comments, suggestions that you have.

Very nice package overall. Sigma lenses are great and if you are buying the whole package, any incompatibilities would be the responsibility of the seller.

What bad things have you heard? Is it from inexperienced users or people using old lenses?

The most important thing to do is spend a LOT of time learning the camera and practicing with your new setup. If you expect great results straight away then you will be disappointed.

Enjoy.

Craig.

I have been surfing the web. In many different forums, I see people saying that there are compatability issues with Sigma Lenses and the new Canon Digital Rebel (as well as the 10D). Something was telling me I doubt Ritz would just throw a package together with lenses that were not compatable, then again, I was thinking that you never know. It very well could have been from people with older lenses.

I have a Minolta 700si with a Sigma 75-300mm lens, and I am extremely pleased with the results that lens had to offer. I know the quality of Sigma lenses is great.

I have the Canon 10D. I had bought a Sigma 135-400 lens and it focused really slow and searched alot at 400mm. I couldnt get good focus out past 200mm. I returned the lens. I have had good results with a Canon 17-40L, Canon 28-135 and a Canon 100-400L. I know you get what you pay for but I do think that Canon lenses focus better witht the 10D than other brands. Most of the complaints I have seen about focus on the 10D and Rebel have been with non Canon lenses.

Sigma reverse engineer their lenses from Canon originals as Canon doesn't tell independent manufacturers exactly how the EOS system works. Some Sigma lenses have not functioned correctly or have caused lock-ups on the newer EOS cameras because of an incompatibily that comes from Sigma not having the full details of the workings of the system. As far as I can gather, Sigma have offered to re-chip lenses that don't work with the newer Canon cameras which sorts the problem out. I have no idea whether these lenses are OK or not.

If you get that error message contact Sigma USA and find out where to have to lens updated. They have done it for free for a couple of people I know. They WANT their lenses to work with the cameras.

Having used a 170-500 with both a D60 and a 10D I can say that it does focus slower than a Canon L, but it is 1/3 the price of a 100-400 and for what it costs it gives very nice performance.

Given no restrictions on budget I would buy only L glass from Canon. But in the real world...

I snet my 170-500 MM back to Sigma for it to be reworked to the 10D. It took about 10 days including shipping. And it works great now.

Having said that I am getting a 100-400 MM L IS so if you can afford this lens I would go with the Canon
