New Smithsonian Museum Opens On Dec. 15th.

Mon Dec 08, 2003 7:58 am

The National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center opens a week from tomorrow. Any A.net photographers going to the opening ceremony? I went to their web site and checked out their press kit and web cams. Wow! Concorde, Stratoliner, Dash 80 and others look WONDERFUL in their new home.

More photos here:

The Museum's home page is here:

I do wish, as was mentioned on a Concorde forum elsewhere, that someone would "hang" a Concorde in supersonic mode with gear, nose and visor up. That would look VERY cool.

If anyone's going to the opening, or just visiting the museum afterwards, shoot and upload! Can't wait to see some of the Boeing planes I shot leaving Seattle in their new home!

William

William,

Went to the museum on Saturday, they held an "Appreciation Day" for donors and supporters.
The place is huge, lots of interesting planes (many more coming when the last 2 hangers are finished), many hanging from the ceilings at interesting angles. The only real problems that I noticed are a definite lack of good lighting for photography, it's pretty dim inside, and the exorbitant $12 parking fee (museum itself is free) - I have been told that $50 annual parking passes will soon be available. Could not check out the observation tower due to the very long lines, the elevator can only hold 20 persons at a time and there were hundreds in line to go up. Not so sure how it will be for photography, but, the views should be great as it is broadside to the approach for runway 1R.

Hey guys:

Myself and two of my pilot friends are driving down from Toronto on December 21st to spend 2 days at the museum. One day at the new Dulles site and one day at the Mall site. It's kind of distressing to hear that the lighting is poor as the website also notes that tripods are not allowed in the building. As a practical measure I can understand that having hundreds of people setting up tripods would be a real mess, but if they are going to forbid tripods, you would think at least they could give people good lighting.
Well we're going down anyway and will try to post anything good that I get.

Steve

Great! Looking forward to seeing some shots in the DB from the museum.

Just think, you could drop by the museum during a layover at Dulles. Finally, a good place to spot near a US airport!  Big thumbs up

As for the lighting... looks like you may have to try my patented "rest-the-camera-on-top-of-a-trash-can" technique.

Necessity is the mother of invention!

.....the website also notes that tripods are not allowed in the building....

It's very rare anywhere in the world that a Museum allows Tripods to be used. This is because of the risk of these photos being made available for sale, which can potentiality cause the Museum to loose revenue.
