Your Favourite Photographer(s) Of 2003

Wed Dec 17, 2003 4:11 am

Well the end of 2003 is fast approaching and I think it has been the best year yet for aviation photography with the introduction of new cameras, lenses, aircraft, airlines, angles, photographers etc.

Main reason for this post, as the topic suggests is for you to name your favourite photograher(s) of the year.

For me, its tough so many good shots out there this year and a wide range of photographers all producing cracking stuff.

My votes go to :-

Janne Laukkonen

TZ Aviation

Jan Mogren

Derek Pedley

Joe Pries

Wietse De Graaf

Alexander Jonsson

Tim De Groot

Philippe Noret

Peter Unmuth

Luis Rosa

Tomás Coelho

There are of course many other photographers who's work I enjoy and many shots I have liked over the year but I can't name everyone Big grin

So, go ahead tell us all what photographer(s) you have enjoyed over the past year or what shots you have liked over the past 12 months.

All the best for 2004

Today's photographers are producing lots of great images but I find that I most often open up photos taken in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. Guess I'm just nostalgic... I love the photos by people like Howard Chaloner, Air Nikon,
Eduard Marmet, Johan Ljungdahl, George Hamlin, Peter de Groot. If I had to pick a photographer whose photos I most often enlarge it would probably be
Frank Duarte. Here's a little sample of his stuff...

Hi,

I would say Ben Pritchard LOL but accusations could be made...  Big grin

I am inspired by some of your shots and you have a Canon D30 which I am getting used to using (Properly or at least attempting to) at the moment.

Also these other photographers:

T Silgrim

Paul Dopson

Derek Pedley

Justin Wood  Big grin Big grin (Wanders if anyone will notice  Innocent)

There are many others who's work I enjoy looking at as well but these few stuck out the most for me.

Great idea Ben.

I am always consistently impressed by seeing people get better and better. Ben Pritchard is absolutely the best in this regard. He has learnt so fast, and now almost everything he shoots is technically perfect. He is also one of the guys without airside access, and for them getting that "great" shot is always that bit harder.

Of all those people with airside access, Sven De Bevere has a genuinely artistic eye and his stuff is stunning. Martin Rosenkranz is somebody I haven't seen mentioned often. His stuff is top-rate:

The one person I try to emulate is Peter Unmuth. He's lucky to travel so much, but he doesn't waste that luck - somehow, no matter what the circumstance and no matter what the weather, he produces first-class material. That consistency, with so many images, is amazing.

So many other people are brilliant - to mention just one, Andy Martin's desert trips and his older stuff is lovely.

Oh man, where to start?

Art Brett owns. Maybe a bias, but a wonderful photographer and friend. getting his 2000th shot with an outrageous picture and jsut rockin the scene.

Sven De Bevere....having perhaps the most crisp and perfect shots everytime. Amazing. Easily in my top 3 of all time.

Ryan C. Umphrey. Look through a list of thumbnails and you cna ALWAYS tell which ones are his. PERFECT, and I mean PERFECT use of saturation and lighitng with interesting framing and balance of color. Hsi shots make me want to lick the scree and taste the paint!

Luis Rosa, Ben Pritchard, Derek Pedley, Weitse, Colin Work, Vasco Garcia, Gary Watt, Peter Umuth, Joe Pries and Rudy Chiarello are other guys that either exploded or maitnained their awesome levle of skill this year. Outrageous stuff.

A good year for aviation photography.

Thank you guys!

Everyone who uploads his pics here is my favourite.
All those guys and girls whose photos make me say "wow" almost every day when I open the recent uploads. And that for years now!
My personal favourites are aware of my admiration for their work.

Oh thanks Ben, never expected to see my name on that list.
I am glad you like my shots, in fact I like yours a lot too.
One reason could be that we take shots from similar angles,
but you have some extra bonus living in London with all that interesting stuff  Big grin

Here are some of the photographers which I think have done a great job this year:
Jan Mogren
Sven De Bevere
Philippe Noret
Ben Pritchard

well here goes.. I am sure to forget some, but I will repost those names when they come up to me  Big grin

Sven de Bevere: Very nice guy who I enjoyed shooting with here at AMS.

Sam Chui: Great shots from all over the world and I am sorry I missed him at the Frankfurt convention.

Joe Pries: Too bad for us he moved to Charlotte, but I am sure we keep seeing great stuff from him.

Jan Mogren: The king of quality over quantity... everything he uploads is great work.

Ben Pritchard: Have fun talking to him on MSN, he has great pics on this site.

Tom Turner: Those great low sun climbout shots

Vasco Garcia: Getting every bit of resolution out of that beast of his. Too bad I missed you when you came to AMS.

Konstantin von Wedelstaedt: Great pics and I hope to meet him one day.

Tim de Groot: Not my kind of photography, but the way his shots are constantly full frame is just amazing.

As I said, there are many other great photographers on this site, but there are too many to remember.

Wietse

PS. Thanks to everyone who has put me on their lists.

Firstly many thanks to everyone who mentioned my name.

I have to agree with many of the names put forward above but the one person who I feel deserves a nomination, above all others, is Colin Work who, apart from some excellent pictures, is the one person who has helped me and I would imagine many, many others with his expert advice and support on this forum thoughout the year.

Well, for me this year revelation were Tomás Coelho and Martin Rosenkranz. Tomás is a great photographer and a good friend of mine. I had the pleasure to meet him at Evora and was stunned by his professional attitude towards photographing airplanes.

As for the rest of the photographers, Luis Rosa, Sven de Bevere, Andrew Hunt, Derek Pedley, Joe Pries, Vasco Garcia (whose photo composition skills inspire me to always try something new), Bailey and the Mogren brothers were the best of 2003.

In the end, all the photographers who made it into this site in 2003 should be mention. Every photo has it admirer. Lets wait and see what 2004 produce. Big grin

This is a good one.....I remember about 4 years ago Thomas Millard started a similar topic....back then a lot of photographers were still here who are here anymore.

I am glad to see that my name poped up here and there. Big grin

Since you narrowed it down to 2003 I would say these are mine:

- Bailey has shown us some amazing stuff from the air
- Sven de B. always a pleasure to look at his creations
- the AMS boys take nice pictures too (p.s. Wietse, I"ll be back next year for another ramp tour) Big grin
- crooked eye inflight Joe Pries...it was good to see him again at the FRA convention
- Jan Mogren
- Colin K. Work.......the master of convertors
- Rudy C. from Boston
- and of course Mark Garfinkel........even though he has not uploaded that much this year.

The list could go on and on.......maybe we should ask who is your favorite photographer at the following airports____________________

Hmmm I don't see my name here anywhere?  Wow!

Sorry I can't list my favorites.
1. The list is too long

and

2. I might be accused of favoritism.

Seriously though you all deserve a pat on the back as the quality of your photos is outstanding. There are some exceptional ones and the remainder have to be really good to get on A.net. Keep up the good work and I look forward to viewing your gems, not just as a screener but for my own personal pleasure as well. Over many many years I have enjoyed aircraft photography and the last 6 months I have learned so much more about how different people from different parts of the world enjoy a common interest in aviation. A.net crosses many boundaries to bring people closer together in aviation.

Keep them coming.  Big thumbs up

What does it take to get on here....??

I would have to admit I agree with all of the above choices. I don't think there is really a bad photographer, but being only my first year, how about a rookie post?

"Who is your favorite rookie photographer" I bought my camera in March and its my first attempt ever at taking pictures..

I won't reiterate the ususual suspects - I think I've been impressed with shots by all those mentioned so far. But I'd like to add Andreas Zeiter - his fast jet shots are fantastic.

Grant asked about rookie photographers ... well if you mean by newcomers to A.net, then 2 that stand out for me for 2003 are Dimitris Triadafillou and Kristof Jonckheere who have both produced absolute jaw droppers.

Thanks to those who mentioned me (Derek - the cheque is in the post  Smile)

Thanks guys voted for me, feel very proud  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
My list can go on and on nonstop.

I feel I should mention most people do not have ramp/cockpit access, simply that makes harder for them to shoot and produce a great image.

Frank Durate--just visited him and he is one of the first photography teacher I met on my very first photo trips at LAX.

Sven de Bevere and Philippe Noret--Finest Action photog on A.net

Tom Turner--(One of the) Finest NYC photog with amazing A2A shots!

Art Brett--The upload King here and I scored more luck stayed at his house  Big grin

Andy Martin--A great friend to hang out with, also got a unique eye of catch.

Royal King--getting very good only started a year ago!

Tim De Groot--fantastic slides! Best shooter in AMS on K64 I think!

Glenn Stewart and Norbert Genci--becoming the best young gun down under.

Other on the list (I ran out of reasons)

Martin Fenner
Matthew Willmott Sharp
Gabe Basco
Kok Chwee Sim
Marlo Plate
Konstantin v W
Wietse
Chris Sheldon
Colin Work
Michael Carter
Andrew Hunt

To try to single out individuals from so many great people is almost devisive, but a few are worthy of special mention:

Sam Chui's produced some stunning stuff this year - I'm still chasing membership of his "1000/1000 club" (more than 1000 photos/more than 1000 hits per photo) and I'll be there by the end of the year, but for now many of his pictures are an inspiration - I particularly liked his pics from Cuzco and Jo'burg. He's a nice guy too!

Art Brett is a great friend, and he's also produced some great photos, not just this year but over many years. I hate to single out any one above all the great people I've met through airliners.net but of all those people Art and Anne are the best, and he even persuaded this synic to like Concorde!

If there's one person who's inspired me to go somewhere new next year, its Dimitris Triadafillou. I don't know him, but no ifs, no buts, he's taken some stunning pictures in a location I just HAVE to visit - I think I'd rather go to mid Wales than to St. Maarten!  Nuts

I've met many other great a.net photographers this year - Tobi and Michael in Hamburg - Paul, Clovis, Jay, Michael, Michael, Duncan, Carlos and Tim in LAX - Mike, Art, Brian, Justin, Tom, Yvegeny, Phil, Mario, Ron and others in New York. I'm sure there's other that I've overlooked in the moments I've had to write this post. Everyone's great, but time simply precludes me pulling out their pictures.

All I hope is that I meet as many great photographers in 2004 as I did in 2003. Take care all, and have a great holiday.

First, let me thank those who threw my name into the mix. It was a pleasant surprise to be acknowledged by you all and I appreciate it.

I've thought long and hard as to who I might nominate for such honors. Those previously named deserve the credit they been given as their pictures have been outstanding. But there are so many more who have uploaded stunning pictures this year it's impossible to name them all. Suffice it to say I've appreciated so many of the photographs that have been uploaded by all. Thank you for taking the time to share them with us.

And, more importantly, let me congratulate all of the A.net photographers for truly being a great bunch of people. All that I have met in my travels this year and those that have visited us here in New York have been wonderful. I've truly enjoyed meeting and spending time will all of you.

Thanks Ryan... I'm flattered to have been mentioned along with so much other great a.net talent.
As for me, my fav photogs are my buddies that I shoot with here and the ones I shoot with when I'm away from home.

These guys are so consistent it is sickening Some of their photos to me are labeled nothing short of 'amazing.' The clarity of the shots, the angle of the shots etc are all superb. Great job guys.<<

I'm not going to pump up the tyres of my mates by posting their photos, instead I would like to nominate all those people who I have e-mailed over the last year commenting on their magnificent work - you all know who you are and we ALL know how good your work is!

There have been some great photos this year, but as always there is always the chance to better them! May you all enjoy blue skies, the sun at your back and few rejections in 2004!

Seasons greetings to you all.

Carlos, you are unfortunately one of the names I forgot to put on my list.. Superb action shots taken from Airside spots.

Cheers all,

For me, the list is short and simple.

(1st) Derek Pedley - Fantastic Image Quality
(2nd) Andy Martin - Plenty of variety, well travelled
(3rd) Sven De Bevere - Good sharp photos of high speed aircraft
