Atlanta Spotting?

Fri Dec 19, 2003 1:45 am

Hello

I'm going to ALT this coming Monday for just this day.

Any good spots to see a Delta MD-11?? I'll be on foot, or do I really need a car too?

Any help is very much appreciated!

haha, Atlanta spotting sucks. If you're on foot, the best you're going to be able to do is from the parking deck.

Took these from the South parking deck..

The spot is pretty much useless anytime but late afternoon...

a related question: now in the winter with the sun really low, and the parking deck has you facing south, would it be a waste of time to attempt shooting? I wonder if you would be shooting right into the sun most of the day.

Hank's top picture above was from November, and of course the sun is even a bit lower still, and obviously it was done very late in the day. But what about a couple hours earlier - bad sun?

Bruce, to maybe partly answer your question...this photo was taken around mid-day if i remember correctly...obviously photos during the day from the south garage will be backlit, the sun is much further south in the winter of course...my guess is that only late afternoon shots like Hank's MD88 shot will provide non-backlit shots...

The 764 climbout shot was in the summer, and i'm actually eager to get some shots like that myself...

but, he wants to see the MD11, i'm guessing it will arrive 26L/8R and depart 27R/9L...on foot, if they are landing the 8s/9s, try the north parking garage...otherwise you won't see it...and you're kinda outta luck if they're landing on the 26s/27s as you probably won't catch it arriving...but departing it will most likely depart 9L/27R so you'll see it from the south garage either way...the sun won't be the best unless you can get over to a spot on the south side of the field...

good luck

Mike, for approaches to 27L, go to Lake Mirror Rd just South of the bridge at the end of the runway. There's a city driveway entrance there. Pull in and turnaround to face the incoming traffic landing into the prevailing winds from the West. A 200mm+ lens should get you what you want. The last two times I was there, an MD-11 landed on the South runway in early afternoon. Good luck.

If you will be IN the airport, just go to E-Concourse........the 2 last MD-11s are only on ATL-NRT and NRT-ATL(801 and 807).

When I lived in ATL after 9/11 and tried to take pictures from the Terminal South parking deck I was told to leave every time. I guess they've changed their policies since I moved a year and a half ago. I don't know if you are still allowed to do this, but you might be allowed to take pictures from the hill across the street from the GA terminal (right down the street from the Renaissance). You need a relatively long lens, at least 300mm.

Because of the direction of the aircraft that day I did not try the outside parking deck, planes were way too high.

Took some shots from inside, very very hard with the constant patrol and code orange alert over the pa every 5 min, made my heart pound all day in fear of getting busted.
