Sun In HKG - Holy Crap!

Tue Dec 23, 2003 9:56 am

You guys in Hong Kong must be sick of aviation photography by now...for the past two weeks, I've noticed that the forecast has been NOTHING but "mostly sunny". And the 7 day forecast looks to be more of the same.

I'm just extremely jealous, that's all. I've been traveling on business a lot for the past couple of months, and EVERYWHERE I go has been cloudy and gray. This has been, by far, my longest stretch without ANY photography in a long time. Can't wait to return home to sunny San Diego tomorrow!

Maybe a stupid question, but does HKG get "low" winter sun? Probably not as extreme as northern cities, but if the light is better this time of year, you guys have hit the jackpot. Seriously.

Scott

Generally in HKG and Thailand and Japan/China, winter time is nice and about the only consistent time you can get some good sun. I used to live in HKG over 10 years and witness most people take photos in good winter sun season.

Indonesia is somewhat different as it is close or under the equator, with July and August being the best season to go there for photos! Lot of blue sky except Jakarta is polluted heavily.

From what I observe Singapore must have the worst weather but this dosen't mean you don't see sun...but probably 5 mins of great deal of sun with a thunderstorm follows as tempature warms up.

Sun, great!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Haze, baaaaaad!!  Angry

While the sun has been around for a while lately, unfortunately so has the haze. Visibility hovers around the 7 km mark. Makes for a greyish background for every photo, unless I'm shooting straight up into the sky. A cold front is forecasted to whip through later this week, and hopefully will clear out the muck a bit for the upcoming 4-day Christmas weekend.

Yeah Singapore's weather is okay . . . not the greatest. You either have full sun, and minutes later the clouds come and it starts to rain, or it would be cloudy in the morning and clearing up in the afternoon.

sometimes rain isn't all that bad. If you live in a city with good vantage points and have some free time you can experiment with different shots. Before the rain, with the big dark clouds rolling in, or after the rain stops and the runways are all wet. And if you get sun and rain together in the sky that is where rainbows form. Of course you'd have to be willing to sit inside your car for the duration of the rain....

The weather's been quite ok recently - sunny most of the time, and the haze is actually manageable. It's also better in the mornings.

The sun does get lower in the winter, but not as low as some northern cities. We do get a significantly shorter day during the winter months, and the temperature does drop quite a bit.

If you like the weather here, you should come here for a visit!

Actually, I have been in Hong Kong once (very cool city), but it rained every day I was there. I guess that's why I am so suprised to see that there has been sun for so long.

I didn't think about the haze...yeah, that takes away some of the punch. But at least it's better than thick cloud layer.

If you come in the dry season, there should be not much rain. Autumn is probably the best time.

Hi all

I've been to Honkers twice, both times in November and both times with great sunshine.

Made my Kai Tak photos a little special.

Cheers

Every year the haze gets worse and worse so even when you have clear blue sky you often can't see it.

Two days ago it was rather nice, then yesterday it was terrible....

Check this link, there is a live view from Victoria Harbour, you can see the haze. Remember the haze is always worse at the airport.
