When Luck Smiled Upon You: 2003

Sat Dec 27, 2003 2:02 pm

Alright... is there room left for ONE more retrospective thread? Besides... there's only 5 days left in 2003. And then we'll have to wait another year!  Big thumbs up

Here's the deal... show us one of your photos from this year where you just plain lucked out. And I don't mean luck as in "... and I turned around and there was (reg number) on approach!" I mean something in-camera.

I'll lead by example:

When I opened this image up large the first time (and you don't have to to see what I am talking about...), I was happily surprised to get them perfectly square to the lens. Then I noticed the orientation of the Mustang's prop. I still can't believe my luck. The geometry of this photo couldn't have been better if I planned it. I should have played the Lotto that day.

Okay... let's see the fruits of your good fortune!

My fruit is in the appeal queue...

But!!! I came over to my brother's room to see what was on the tracker, and I was like... "what's polet?"

Here's the result... after not one, but 2 20 mile trips to and from the airport, Here I have one, the other one (my fruit of 2003) is in the queue.

While droning around SEA, I saw the afternoon Bristish Airways flight. I stopped, got out, ran off about 2 or 3 shots. Didn't think much of it, went and ate...

Never thought it would squeeze in the frame with out cutting something off. Just lucky I guess.

Oh Peter..please don't be sarcastic. What baddouble, 26 of your Concorde photos or 2 photos of my from Phuket of a last 100feet takeoff?

If you read the comment of my shots in there, you found why I upload 2 similar but actually different shots. With such a rare lift up scene I captured, I cannot believe any screener can only allow one shot to be uploaded but not the sequence and the no. of hits also justified the popularity. The 2nd shot I uploaded, is to show WHERE actually the IL96 rotated at, before it gets off the ground. Remember a while ago someone accuse a fake picture of that?

Happy Holidays

You just never know how many hits a paticular shot will be worth here and this shot is evidence of that. I figured 1k maybe 2 at most but 7k and growing blows me away.

I thought this was a interresting shot as I was on final for 27R at ORD. In SEA you dont get a opportunity to shoot A/C on p-approaches so this was a treat.

Happy holidays

I was sick, had to go to work later in the day, a buddy bailed on meeting me for the show, and the car had problems.. I got to the airshow, didn't feel like taking any photos, so I hid out on the fence to the active ramp. Didn't expect to get anything at all, even as I took the photos I thought I would be happier laying in bed... but when I got home that night and took a peek, I was happy with what I found.

Another one was the appearance of the very first Frontier A318, cause I don't knew that it was at photo flight.

My 2003 aircraft shots can't be considered lucky as I was either :
a) going to the airport anyway
b) told in advance of a particular aircraft (757 at CMF)

My only lucky shots were the ones I got with a little help from our friends at the front  Big thumbs up :

Maybe less lucky, but good weather conditions, rotation at the right moment on the right runway meant these :

I think I was pretty lucky with this shot, first of all I had the luck to get inside the LTU A320, and when I saw one of my teachers walk by, I tried to get a shot of him. When I checked the shot later, I discovered that the photo were pretty good, considering it is handheld and the computer is a nice addition to it  Smile

I waited for her as long as I could and just when I were going to leave when another photographer saw her on the horizon so I waited, then I had to run back to the Underground to get back to LHR on time for my flight back home.
Getting to see this beauty once was well worth this trip.

This one was a lucky one too

Lady luck looked down on me on concordes final day at LHR.

I was stood on a traffic barrier that we had made mobile to look thru the worst mesh fence id ever seen in me life! fell off quite a few times.I took maybe 50 shots of this same pic but only 1 came out any decent due to the fence!

I'm pretty sure I have a picture of you trying to get that shot Ryan Smile/happy/getting dizzy

My effort is another Concorde shot, I was sat on the grass shooting some close ups of BOAF and not paying any attention to what was going on elsewhere until I saw BOAG in the viewfinder making her way to the hangars
for the night so I just pressed the shutter as an instant reaction and this is the result:

Friendly clarification...

These are all great photos, but I meant more along the lines of strange, interesting and unusual things happening IN the photograph itself.

I was tracking the 777 when I sensed rather than saw "something" else in the viewfinder and pressed the shutter. Clearly the composition could have been better, but having spent a lot of effort throughout the year to deliberately do something similar, I realise I was lucky to get anything at all!

The problem is that with a very long lens setup, the angle of view is so small that a) you can't see what's coming until the last second and b) the chances of 2 aircraft co-existing in the frame is very small (and for a very very short time).

So here's a challenge for 2004 - who can get the best "contrail cross" ?

Cheers,

Colin

I went out to take pics of Lufthansa landing at Zagreb and I was riding my bike when I saw something approaching so I speeded up a bit ands barely managed to get to photo site
and take the camera out.
I thought it was a Croatia Airbus but I was quite surprised with winglets when it came close enough

I didn't recognize the type immediately,
well if it wasn't written on the plane I doubt I would recognize it at all

Allright, something recently happened that DEFINATELY works in this thread:

I never even saw the HA 763 approaching. I guess when it entered the frame, I instinctively hit the shutter... in any case, the aircraft BARELY made it in the frame. Plus, both aircraft are very rare catches at SAN.

I think I had a bit of Colon-itus in me that day, catching 2 a/c in one frame without even planning it...

Nice shot Mike. Tony's been telling me about your shots and after seeing some of your firefighting stuff I have to agree that you've got quite an eye.

Time for you to upgrade to an SLR!

I accidentaly bumped across this Beluga at AMS, and wasn't at all happy with how it was parked at first. I also had forgotten my ladder, so I had to shoot through the fence.

When she was pulled inside the hangar, things changed.
I had a feeling that this one would work out and it did.

The shadow of the hangar, the shape of the plane and the morning sun just put it all together for me.
