What Do You Think Of My First Shot?

Tue Dec 30, 2003 10:53 am

Hey everyone..  Big grin Big grin

http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=GRZ25122003OELTM.jpg

I want to join the club of "spotters" now and this is one result of my first rounds of pix which I tried to upload. Got rejected for "overall too dark"!  Sad

Nevertheless, what do you think? How can I fix it up - or is it worthless to spend time on this picture?

Thank you very much for your input!

Happy Spotting,

Patrick

I think it's a good picture. Maybe if the sun had been behind you it would have turned out better.

Go to photoshop and play with the curves a bit, definitely a good shot.

I agree, I like the shot. I think I would make a copy and try something in Photoshop. Think I'd crop a bit, maybe even cut off the mainwheel because you can't see all of it. Keeping my shape, I think mostly I'd cut off a bit of the very bright sky and then see if that would permit me to bring up the brightness of the fuselage sides without burning out the remaining sky completely. Edit the "curve" probably.

I like the light and shadow inside the cockpit and the flash of prop behind them. If they never accept it, it would still look good on your wall.

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

I disagree, cutting off the nose gear might leave you with a nice bad motive rejection, just play around with the curves.

Just "dodge" the mid-tones/highlites a little on the fuselage the exposure behind the plane is good.

Sometimes location just dictates what to shoot, but try to avoid backlit subjects. It just works against you unless you really know what you are doing and/or are trying for a certain effect.

You might be able to save this by playing levels as noted above. I think you could use a bit of USM, appears a bit soft.

The light playing on the prop is nice and the photo has potential. Half the battle can be in your post processing so keep at it!

The main problem to me, seems that there's a lot of empty space in this picture - crop it a little tighter, a little USM and curves should do the job.

Good luck,

Alex.

I really like that photo... unfortunately, it's "offbeat" and pretty "artsy", along with some imperfect lighting, which throws it off of the ALN quality curve. Had the lighting been on your side, you still might have gotten a "badmotiv", but in any case, I think you're definately on the right track and it's only a matter of time before you get some photos on the site.

At least you're not bummed about a reject! That's better than SOME of us (why are you all looking at me?)...

Hi Patrick,

A little tweaking of levels, with a touch more USM and this is what I got:

Cheers!

Hello again everyone...

I tried to edit the image and lighten it up a little - thanks Manzoori for posting your example.

I use Paint Shop Pro - could somebody explain the USM function  Big grin !?

What do you think? Worth re-uploading?
Another reason why the picture seems dark is probably because the airplane (except for the nose cover) was very dirty...
