Badmotiv, Comments Please.

Fri Jan 02, 2004 8:00 am

Hello fellow a.net junkies!

Got a badmotivrejection on a pic of mine that i actually thought has the best motive of any of my pics in the database. I don't think i will bother with an appeal, ill just upload it somewhere else, just interested in some feedback/comments.
This is the picture:

http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=N524MC1024C.jpg

...and it shows a 747 that has just begun to taxi and is blowing a couple of large containers out on the grass. As i wrote in the remark, they flew like autumnleaves. Now on to the badmotive definition:

  • bad angle, included window reflections - angle is pretty normal, no reflections

  • pictured just a part of an aircraft - nope, the whole aircraft is there

  • out of focus - nope

  • distracting or obstructing objects in the foreground - nope, but in the background there are containers flying around.

  • did not picture an aircraft - nope, aircraft is there

  • your camera displays the date - nope, thats not it

  • So why was it rejected for badmotiv?

I think it needs a tighter crop, and maybe a bit more light (work on curves maybe)

    Otherwise, I don't see a problem.

Jofa, it's possible that the screener didn't read the caption and thought it was a bad crop. try making note of the blowing containers in the "screener note" when you upload.

Vafi88, thanks for your comment, tighter crop might do it but i think it ruins the composition. Lighter might also do it but its already lighter than it really was that day.

Sunilgupta, thank you also for your input.

Been thinking more about this one. This is one of those images that works best in a really wide crop. Like 1024x200 or so. The rest of the sky and ground detracts from the action, the blowing containers which are the point of the shot.

Unfortunately aDOTn does not put up such high-aspect ration pictures as that. Sometimes you get a picture that is just made for 1x8 or 8x1 formatting. They may look great on your wall but you will not be seeing them here.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

I'm not a photographer, but I can offer you some insight as a viewer. When I opened the photo, I didn't really see much of a focal point to the photo. The center is pretty empty, and the plane is way on the left.

    Slamclick, thanks

FSPilot747, Any idea how i should have done to make it better? I mean, had the plane filled the entire picture then the containers - which makes the picture IMO - would have been cropped. And had i focused only on the containes and cropped away the plane then there would have been a reson for the badmotive rejection.

There are two things about this picture.
Firstly, perhaps the "special" about this image is not apparent at a first glance, but that is the case on many images on a.net, some of the best/funniest photos I've seen here required some time to really grasp the whole picture...

Secondly, the aircraft behind your motive has a very unfortunate placing in the picture, same goes for the de-icing machine... that is not much that you as a photographer can do about that, but then again, all pictures are not 100%, this happens to be one of them... having said that, I have to repeat what I said earlier: I've seen pictures of the same quality being published on a.net, and since they were approved, so should yours...

It seems to be a little to many details, causing the picture to blur up, or melt down if you care... the motive is no longer obvious..

I can imagine this must have been quite a sight in real life though!!
