Canon Telephoto Lens Problems...

Mon Jan 05, 2004 5:00 am

Hi guys,

I currently own a Canon 10D and the 75-300 f4-5.6 IS USM. This lens is ok as long as you dont go above 200mm after which its completely useless. Images come out really soft - does anyone else with this lens suffer the same problems?
Anyway, Im looking to probably replace this lens with either:
70-200L (+ teleconverter)
or 100-400L.

What are your recommendations folks, do I need a new lens, or a new technique  Big thumbs up

Canon's 75-300s are known to be softer at the long end than at shorter focal lengths, but not so soft as to be useless. In fact, my experience from previously using the 75-300 is that it's quite capable of delivering a.net standard images at the long end, especially if its not used wide open. If images taken with over 200mm are useless, you have a lens problem. 100-300 is measurable better at all lengths, and the 70-200 maybe even more so, but of course both these lenses carry a significant price premium over the 75-300.
