Kenko 2x Converter For EOS

Fri Jan 09, 2004 1:05 pm

Fellow DSLR Users:

Have anyone has experienced using Non-Canon 2x Converter from Kenko? I have seen a 2X Converter from Canon that only works with the L-Lense series.

If anyone has experienced with Kenko 2X Converter, is it compatible with Canon 75-300IS and Vivitar XR/IF 28-300mm?

How is the quality?

Thanks for you help people.

Sincerely,

Jay Piboontum

Hi Jay,

I'm using a friends Kenko Teleplus Pro300 2x convertor for the moment, though not with either of the lenses you mentioned.

It's been used with my Canon 75-300 USM III non IS lens. As with all 2x extenders it reduces the aperture at 300mm from f5.6 to f8, which then means that the AF won't function. There is a way to fool the system by taping some of the pin connections between the lens and the convertor but I don't recall ever getting that to work.

I've not been able to take any decent handheld shots with the doubler on. What I have found it useful for is taking shots of the moon, but this means setting up on a tripod, setting mirror lockup, manual focus and timer shutter release. Even then the results are very hit and miss but that's more likely down to my ineptitude at manual focusing!

Cheers!

it reduces the aperture at 300mm from f5.6 to f8

It should reduce the aperture to F/11 as you loose two stops with a 2X converter.

F5.6 - F6.7 is half a stop.

Basically the aperture scale in whole stops goes: F2.8 - F4 - F5.6 - F8 - F11 - F16

Hey Guys:

Thanks for the response!!! Many thanks for your first hand experience account with Kenko 2x Converter. I did read breifly about the converter specifications and what are the limitations. Although they mentioned that Auto-Focus will work in "Great" lighting condition and with Aperature above 4. There is no real "lum" or "lux" detail on what they meant by "Great" lighting condition. I am guessing 12 noon high sunlight LOL....  Smile

Oh... well, I guess I am going to the camera store this weekend to take a look at it myself. I have to agree with you guys that a 2X converter may not perform well for any aircraft photogrpaphy. Maybe I will just have to invest in an actual lens.

Many thanks again for your time.

Cheers - Jay

Jay...look at some of CKW's work. He has done a ton of stuff with both 2x and 1.4 (although Canon brand I believe.) He has doubled them up along with a prime lens and has come up with some stunning work, but I would bet he went through lots of rejects to master it!
