Help With Digital Camera & Software

Wed Jan 14, 2004 3:37 am

I recently bought a Fuji S5000 digital camera which can go up to 6 megapixels and has an optical zoom equivalent to 370mm.

If i set the camera to 3.1 mega pixel mode, with the equivalent of ISO200 chrome film, the photos are above 1mb in size (much larger if i set it to 6m).

What software can I use, if i set the camera to 6 megapixels, to reduce the size of the file to below 1mb without losing the quality?

Also i have had 3 rejections (3 more that is) and although I can see why on one of the photos I cannot see why on the 1st one

http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=a330emirates-a6eac-bhx.jpg

as all i got was the standard rejection response. If someone can tell me exactly what is wrong with these or if i can make them any better (i still have the originals on file) I would be very grateful.

Obviously i would like to use the highest Megapixel settings to improve quality but it is the sheer file size that makes this difficult. I can also set the camer to standard film mode and chose from ISO200, 400 or 800.

Msh666,

I too have a Fuji, but the S7000. I have it set on 6MP, and just play around with all the other settings. I'm still new to this but one thing I have learned is that you need an editing program to reduce the file size, and improve quality.

I have downloaded a program to reduce file size called 'Irfanview'. It's free and it does a great job of changing a very large file, to almost whatever size you want.

Also, I decided to buy a program to improve the quality, my one is Neat Image. It cost me £40 but is well worth it, I have just had my first 2 pics accepted.

Let me know if you want the links to these and I will send them. Also, if you like, you can send me the original files and I'll see what I can do.

Cheers,

LM

Just re-size the image to 1024 x ???, and save as a .jpg and it will be way under 1 mb.

Hello,

You'll find the rejection reason when clicking on the link you get in your rejection message. Your last 50 or so rejections will then show up, & the reason is given for every photo. There is also a link on that page to a .txt file with more details.

The photo you posted looks like a badscan rejection, but could also be baddark (because the sun is on the other side) or badsize (because of the size ratio). There seems to be slight motion blur as well (visible at the reg).

You can get the best quality by shooting with the lowest ISO setting possible & the highest MP/best JPEG quality (something like JPEG fine) & resizing the photo down to roughly 1000 pixels.
