What Is Wrong With These Pics?

Thu Jan 15, 2004 10:45 am

Hello everyone! I just got a 5.0 megapixel Kodak camera for Christmas and I know it's not the best 5.0 mp camera you can get but I was hoping the quality would be good enough to at least get accepted onto

So I took over 400 pics of planes on my recent flight(s) from MCO-ATL-IND-ATL-MCO. Then I got home, picked out just 4 of the better ones or the ones I liked the most and rotated them as necessary so they would be level, etc, etc. I uploaded them and they ALL got rejected. Here they are:

The email said they were not good enough quality. So what do you all suggest? Do you agree? If so, what can I do to fix it? Thanks so much for your time

No offence, but they really don't do much for me. Quite grainy, and at 1600 wide it really shows, might look better at 1024 wide. Overall they appear dull. Not sure why, but I would not shoot thru the terminal window much more. Get outside and enjoy the fresh air...

First thing you need to do is resize them, try at 1024x768 and the images will appear sharper and any deficiencies are less noticeable. I'm running a 1024x768 monitor so it is difficult to be specific about what is wrong other than to say that they are grainy and that regardless of quality I don't number 3 stands a real chance because of the obstructing objects (luggage trucks etc) and it couldbe the same for number 1 also.

People running 1600x1200 moitors might be able to help a bit more.

First problem is ramp lice. There is no single subject of your photos (more of an overall ramp view). This site really does not like ramp photos with lots of equipment (lice) in the way.

I am working off a laptop at the moment so I can't really tell about sharpness etc...I see quite a bit of haloing around the tail of the 737 in photo 1.
On the cockpit shot it is not balanced in view and the flash has blown out some of the instruments. Cockpit photos are hard.
Number three again has wayyyyy too much ramp lice and no specific point.
Appears a bit soft, but hard to judge on my laptop.

If you are uploading at 1600 wide...don't. Save that for the truly excpetional photo. (of 800 + photos here I think two are at 1600...)

Take a look a recent uploads and honestly compare your shots with those.

What steps, other than rotate and resize, are you doing? What post processing program are you using?

Justin: It doesn't look like you're using Photoshop or any other post-processing program. Give it a whirl. And, as stated before, learn from the masters around here (Art Brett, Louis Rosa, and notice how they frame shots.

I'm a true beginner to the passion of airline photography and the single most important thing I've done is to spend hours and hours looking at shots that have been accepted. Go for it!

I would not be offended at all... here is my address:

I use Paint Shop Pro 8 but I'm not at all knowledgeable yet on all the things you can do with it.
