Possibly contrails??

Or! You can catch airplanes on finals (I can just see a quote like: Airbus A340 about 3 minutes before landing at ___ airport)  Big thumbs up

If I had the money (and the camera), I'd buy it!

I am sure the quality is a bit sub-standard.

When shooting airplanes beyond 600mm or so, unless you have an extremely clear day, you will get different haze effects, either heat, or simply smog or vapor. Also, if you want to shoot good quality shots, 100 ASA might not be nearly sensitive enough.

Keep this lens for bird-watching.

I have the 650-1300mm lens that looks just like that. I got it (knowing it would be poor quality) just to mess around with, and for $200 on ebay. My friend took it to SFO and had some impressive shots with it. They won't get accepted here for sharpness, but some of them were very good. The build quality of the lens is bad-it is just a tube sliding over another tube to zoom, and there is no aperture adjustment or lens contacts (probably constant f8). But, I still think it is fun to use sometimes.
