Help With TPA Photography

Tue Jan 20, 2004 11:55 am

I was wondering if anyone could give me an update of the current photography situation at TPA. I'm looking to take a trip in the next few weeks, but want to make sure it's photographer/spotter friendly.

Also if someone has some info about spots or could point me to a website that has the details, I'd really appreciate it. I'm most interested in finding out whether the garage is a viable photo spot (and if so, what kind of zoom is needed) and whether it's possible to shoot aircraft taxiing for departure from the side of the entry roadway.

Thanks for your help.

Tim

You can find info on spotting at TPA on my website. The address is ...

http://www.anniebees.com

Follow the link to Aviation Photography and then Spotting Locations. You'll find a page for TPA with a crude map and some sample shots showing both film/digital mm settings that the photo was taken with.

I was there in Sept. and there were no problems, and I just returned last night from five days spotting in MIA and FLL and it was good. You shouldn't have any problems.

Good luck.

TPK: see reply 25 & 26 in this thread:

Also, the park and the beach south of the field are open. Lie on the beach as 747s, 777s, A340s........errrrrrr, make that A320s, 737s, MD-80s land in close proximety.

And across the bridge over at PIE, you can see unusual airlines.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your input - I really appreciate it. Right now it's looking like (weather permitting) this weekend will be a go. Hopefully I'll end up with some good photos and another positive experience to share with everyone.

Hi Tim,

Tell me where you went, because I'm planning to do some spotting here, but I don't know where. The planes are landing in a different way for the wind. I knew about the Bowling place but I don't know the other side.

Thanks a lot,

Felipe

My friend, Tim, and I are going to be arriving into TPA early Saturday morning around 6:30 am. We are going to be spotting at TPA garage most of the morning till afternoon before checking-in to the hotel and dropping all of our stuff off. We will be at TPA till Sunday afternoon. Anyone is welcome to stop by and spot with us.

Cheers - Jay

There are not a lot of commercial JET arrivals into TPA before 10:00am. Just departures, about 20 an hour. Arrivals, only about 10-15 before 10:00am.

Spotting from the garage--more specific??? It's a big garage, and actually there's 2 of them. I'm free after 1:30 on Sat, free all day on Sunday.

Hey OZ:

I thought you would be out there that morning. We actually ending our spotting around 11:00am. Tim and I decide to depart TPA early so we don't get in at the crack of dawn  Smile.

Did Brain called you that morning? I though you guys talked? After 11:00am we head down to terminal for lunch and then check-in. Sorry we missed ya but definately we'll head out there again. We give you heads-up next time.

Have a great day!!!

I thought you would be out there that morning.

Well I was, just not at the terminal. I was at the bowling alley shooting arrivals on 18R. Did you see the Spirit go round. Traffic ahead was too close. If you were gone by 3:00pm, then you missed a mostly white 737 BBJ landing on 18L. Oh also there was WN Shamu 735 and the Triple Crown 733. But those should be easy to get at PHX. It's slightly more cloudy today, same runway in use.

Come on back, I love showing people around here. Let me know ahead of time cause I think TPA gives tours.

Cheers,

Ozell

i'm thinking about making a trip out to TPA/PIE sometime in the near future...a friend and i are going to fly over there from jacksonville and maybe get lunch and i'd like to take a few photos. just a day trip kinda thing, but it should be cool. if any of you all around TPA are free on a weekend afternoon then we'd be glad to meet up for a little while. i don't think we'll have ground transportation unless we can make sure that we can get a courtesy car from an FBO...

not sure what the date is yet, just sometime in the next few weekends. any thoughts or tips on FBOs or anything like that are more than welcome.

thanks,
jonathan d.

Hey it's 'Chandler Bing' here  Big grin Good meeting you guys out there in TPA, really had a good time. Funny how and hour drive makes such a difference when spotting (being chased out by cops, and not being hassled at all).

Derden let me know when your gonna head out that way, because I'll probably go back.

Wow!!! I can't believe I hung out with a TV Star, Matthew Perry!!! LOL... It was an honor finally meeting you Justin. We will definately look foward to yours and Brian visit to PHX.
