Movie Mode On Digicams - Which Is The Best?

Fri Jan 23, 2004 7:31 pm

There are apparently many (if not all) digicams capable of shooting video, albeit with a much lower image quality than a camcorder.
I had a Sony which had awful resolution, the the Fuji S5000 that can shoot 640*480 VGA mode, but my current G5 is a tad underneath that.
Is there a relatively cheap and compact digicam that can shoot decent video ? (to be viewed on a PC screen).
That could be useful as I could shoot pics from one cam and shoot a little video with the other when I have the jumpseat (pilots would get concerned by the presence of a huge camera/camcorder).

Same here Big grin Even on the highest ("HQX") quality it was a little bit crappy.

Sorry can't really recommend a decent one as they all are around about the same level  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Good luck anyway,

That's funny, I just thought of that.

I'm flying an A318 in three weeks, and expect to have the jumpseat, so I'm borrowing a digital camcorder to one of my coworkers for that.

However, I'm not sure how good it will be, as the landing shall be by night.

William,

What's your definition of cheap?

Also, worth bearing in mind just how bumpy the flight deck can get! This will make for a very jumpy video unless you can anchor the camcorder down to something solid, but even then most of the fixtures and fittings in an aircraft move about a bit.

Most Camcorders have some degree of image stabilisation built in but they're no steadicams that's for sure!

Cheers!

Cheap means something that I can buy solely with the money I make by teaching French to coworkers, i.e 250 to 300 euro/month.
Otherwise, the cockpit is pretty stable from transition level up to approximately FL100 on descent (if no CAT).

Well, with a couple of months of French you could get yourself one of these

That ought to do the trick no?

Cheers!

Will

Digicams are not great for video. Perhaps in the future they will be.

DVC Cameras are becoming quite small and are packed with features for both video and still photography. I have a Panasonic MX 300 3CCD DVC camera and its amazing what can be done with it. It has now been replaced with the MX 500 3CCD and is even smaller in size and will take 3meg stills on the SD card. The price may be a little more than a digicam but you've got the ability to shoot video and a reasonable still in the one camera. The NZ web site is

http://www.panasonic.co.nz/web_content2.asp?id=100005908

It can be used as a web camera too. I am sure the prices will be more favorable in your part of the world or on your travels.

Regards,

Colin
