Your Average Trip To The Local Strip...

Thu Feb 05, 2004 2:22 am

How long do you spend on average at the airport per shoot...
How many photos do you take and get accepted on the average shoot...

just curious!

On average about 2 hours... (I live 10 mins from the airport, so I don't need to plan a 'day of spotting')
And I take about 30-50 pictures... (Many boring/unsharp/piece-of-plane-outside-frame get deleted on the spot after checking the camera LCD)

Probably 3-5 hours usually(at BDL) longer if I go to LGA or JFK. I live about an hour from both. I try to shoot as much as possible, mostly for my own collection, I find that out of around 150 pics from A day I may only like 10-20 of them to upload. If I think I may shoot more than about the 150 or so my 1 GIG card will hold, I will bring my laptop w/ me for storage...but thats rare.

I live about 15 mins (when I make all the green lights) from FFZ. I spend anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours taking 0-15 shots.

i spend most of the day at the airport when going. Unfortunately I live quite far away from an interesting airport so going for an hour or so is not really practical. Travelling to AMS takes about 2,5 hours, to DUS about 3 hours. Usually I get between 100 and 150 shots.

Interesting question. I tend to spend a long time because in order to make the long drive worth while I need to get as many photos as possible and then spend a month working on them.

for example, when i go to ATL i spend 5 or 6 hours shooting. when I drive to BNA I might spend 4 hours.

At my home airport, because traffic is so slow, the longest i ever spent was 2 hours but a lot of times i just go if i know that an unusual or interesting plane is inbound.

Working as an Air Traffic Controller I normally only spend a few minutes taking my photos; whenever there is something worth taking photos of, I just get in the car belonging to the tower, and drive out to get the photos Smile
If I'm at home, and know that we have an unusual visitor enroute, I go to the airport about 10 minutes before the ETA, and then go back home again as soon as the aircraft has landed.
Working at a rather small airport with mostly local traffic I have gotten most of the aircrafts belonging to this airfield captured, so nowdays I only shoot a few pictures every week (and besides, living north of the arctic circle we don't have much daylight this time of year, and night photographing is way to cold for me and my equipment, meaning there is not much photographing going on)

At my local which is SOU, I will arrive at around 10:30 a.m. and stay till about 2:30 p.m. Not much happens over there so when I visit places such as LGW I will get there for 8:30 a.m. and leave at about 3:30-4:00 p.m. In all I will take about 200 pics @ SOU and up to 800 at LGW. As you can see from my low count in pics on this site I will only tend to upload a few sifting through locating the better ones.

When I go to GSE I usually only stay for like 30 minutes to catch the FR flight on approach. GSE only get around 4 or 5 commercial flights a day, all FR flights. And there are a few hours between each flight, so I don't feel like sitting there and look at a few Cessnas taking off while waiting for the next FR flight.

If I go to GOT I usually hang around there for a couple of hours. Not much action there either if you compare to the bigger airports in Europe. But hey it's better than a little strip with 4 FR flights a day. Big grin

I live 10mins away from INN Airport, so I can go there and leave whenever i want. Usually, on busy charter days I stay from the morning till the evening! On a whole "day of spotting" I take from 200-400 pics, but only about 10-15 will get their chance on A.net, the others are for my private collection. I only upload my best shots here...

My LOCAL airport (40 minutes away) is BLK, but I don't go there to view. I primarily go to MAN, an hour and a half away by train. Because it takes so long, I tend to spend the day there - though it helps that MAN has great facilities for us! When I can drive, MAN will be a mere hour away, and I hope to visit much more regularly!

When I'm going to ARN I'll usually stay for about 5 hours depending on the traffic. I'll take about 100 photos and get 0-30 of acceptable quality :-P.

When I'm going to Arvidsjaur I'm there between 08:30 and 15:30, which is when I have school. And then I'll take 0-50 shots, depending on traffic and if I'm flying or having theory.

My local strip at the moment is Doha. It's OK, but not exactly the busiest airport in the world. Obviously, about 90% of the movements are QR, but some nice stuff - Friday mornings brings Iran Air A300, Iran Aseman ATR-72 and a Yemania B737. Most of the Asian carriers arrive after dark  Sad

Photography is strictly prohibited anywhere near the airport (there's a military base there as well, flying Mirages... er, so I've been told!), so you have to be pretty careful. I hope to get a few uploaded soon.

Ideally, I try to get at least a couple of hours at the airport, in order to maximize the potential variety, and I usually end up taking around 100 pictures or so over that time, and out of those 100, usually I find that about 25% are suitable for post-processing and submission to photo sites...

Here in Winnipeg, I usually head out on the weekends when I first wake up.

I print of the Flight Info (Arrivals/Departures) list for the day and just go to the spot where the light and winds work to my advantage. Depending on what the days holds, I usualy spend about 3 hours. I take about 100 photos, mostly multiple shots of the same plane, just so I get the perfect shot. A good haul will result in about 20 edited and worth a submission.
Contact Winnipeg center now on 134.4, good day.

Since I don't have a major airport just 10 minutes away, I have to travel there by train. It's either STR or FRA, but i don't go to STR because the observation deck is not really good (haven't been to other spots around the airport yet) and there's not so much traffic as in FRA.
It really depends on the weather how much i shoot in FRA. Usually around 50-100 pics but only a small amount turns out to be good enough too keep and an even smaller amount to be uploaded here.
