About To Buy My 300D... Need Advise

Sat Feb 14, 2004 12:55 am

Hi guys.
I know this camera is simply the sensation right know and me as one more will be buying mine shortly, perhaps this weekend.

As you might know, buying this things at Mexico can be as twice as expensive as buying it on the US. So I'll be ordering thru Ritz camera and have it delivered to a friends house in Dallas. (here is the link)

http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=1&productId=13097651&topCategory=1134

Right now I have two Canon lenses (35-80 and 75-300) that I'm planning to use for it but I still think that I should buy it with the 18-55 lens.

My options are to buy just the camera body, or buy it with this lens or there is a package with 2 sigma lenses?

My questions are the next:
Is this my best option?
Should I invest in the sigma lenses?

I read that there is no sales tax and now S&H is that completely true?

One last... How about the memory? I'm planning on one 256MB cause I' don't have much more spare money now, but will that be enough memory? Or I shall really go for 512?

Thanks

Juan

Memory:

I have a 128 for now...
13 photos in RAW format
25-30 in JPG Large quality

so... do the maths!

I really think I should buy something MUCH bigger!

Miquel.

Well if you want to feel comfortable with the memory I suggest the 512, it's a bit more expansive but you'll regret soon or later the 256 choice.

When you're out at the field, those 256 are quickly full.
I only use 512 Lexar which are really fast and reliable.

Hi Juan

Shoot in RAW and get a 1GB MicroDrive. Price is pretty good at the moment.

I use Canon EOS 300D

Canon 18-55mms

Tamron 70-300mms

1GB microdrive

I highly recommend microdrives over flash cards...
I can make about 600 pictures (jpg) medium pic size!!!

Also, I don't think you should buy Canon lenses, other party lenses like Sigma, or, as I use, Tamron are also very good, but cheaper!

Here's a shameless plug - Tamron would be a good choice!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Make sure you call RitzCamera first and ask if they have it in stock. I remember when I ordered mine - www said they are in stock but n the phone they said that I'd have to wait at least two weeks. So I ended ordering from PC Connection - the same price and free 2nd day delivery.

Juan,

I recommend you, buying the 512mb. Because you have too much traffic in Mexico. I can get the 256mb full in a evenning here in Panama. Thats why I brought another 256mb when I was in Miami.

Also I brought a Sigma 70-300 APO a very nice lens. I saw the two Sigma lens offer. I don't know but I think you should better get the camera with the EF-S 18-55 lens. And use your Canon lens for a while, then buy a new one when you are able.

Regards,

Hi guys
Thanks as always for your great tips and opinions.

So I think I'll be going for the 512Mb or the chip as Gary and Florian said.
About the lens, yes I think I'll get the EF-S 18-55 and then buy another one maybe in 2005.

Danny: I'm not on a hurry of getting it and since I'm in MEX then I should have it delivered to my friends house, the reason I picked them is that they don't charge sales tax which gives some money to buy the card!! Smokin cool

So gentleman add one more to the 300D Rebel user list... Juan Carlos Guerra!!!

Gary, Florian:

Is this what you are talking about? I found it while searching ritzcamera.com

http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&productId=13065302&topCategory=1004&cat1=5739563&cat2=5739566

What are the differences between it and the card?
I'll be placing my order on Monday

Thanks

Juan
