How Often Should You Reformat Your CF Card?

Mon Feb 16, 2004 9:54 am

I was out shooting today, and I snap off three pics in a row, and after the 2nd shot the shutter does not release and just abruptly stops....message on the screen read error 99....which is just a catchall for everything other than the few errors on the list, so I follow the directions in the manual to "reset" the problem, and it continues, so I tried everything I could think of, switching batteries, cleaning blah blah blah...nothing. So the last then I do is pull out the CF card blow it out and put it back now all seems ok, so it seems to be a card issue, my question is how often should this thing be reformatted? After every use, once every x number of pics?

let me guess... Canon?

sorry, just seems common lately. I have never formatted my cards. If you blew on it and it cleared the error...why format?

I make a habit of reformatting the card whenever I put it in the camera (ie after downloadingto the PC). I see this as a way of ensuring that the camera is in full control of the file system and removes any nasties Microsoft might have introduced  Smile

I also format following every data transfer from my Microdrive. Reformatting a Microdrive on the Fuji S2 takes seconds and helps avoid possible drive freeze-up I have heard other photographers experience who had never done a reformat.

Other factors can cause a drive malfunction (temp, humidity, etc) but starting with a fresh formatted card each time might help reduce the chances.

I never reformat the card. i just erase all the images. Mine is a Lexar card.

Nobody mentioned it here yet but I was told somewhere that you should always erase and reformat (if you want to) in the camera, not thru the computer when the card is in the card reader.

Hi all

Me too, after a download to the PC, Microdrive back in the camera and re-format before next use.

Interesting the different methods. After one year of use I never formated my CF card, after dowloading the images from the camera via USB to my PC I just delete all images. Only formated my card once before first use.

Never had a problem.

Reformatting doesn't clear the images from the card.
It just clears the File Allocation Table (FAT), which is just an index.

Even after reformatting a card, you can still archive old images that haven't been overwritten if you can can find the 'start' point of each image.

Ok I had the same problem with my D30...  Sad But on my last few photo sessions the Canon behaved itself pretty well.

I have never reformatted my CF card neither, possibly should make it a routine thing just to be on the safe side perhaps.

After downloading my shots to the computer, I always format my Microdrive or CF card in the camera before next photoshoot.
Never had any problems after I started doing it this way.

I have my 10D for 9 months now, and until now I have never reformatted my CF cards. I just 'delete all' after transferring the images to the computer. Neither of my 2 CF cards (Lexar 12x and Silicon 'something' 32x(a non-established brand, nice and cheap  Smile)) have given me problems (yet).
Cheers...

I do things the same way as Tommy Mogren, move the shots from the microdrive to the computer, then put the microdrive back into the camera, format and then re-charge the batteries before putting everything back into the camera bag.  Smile

I find it surprising how few problems I encounter with my CF cards. I usually carry them unprotected in my jeans or coat.

Normally you will never need to re-format a memory card. Unless you put some other stuff in different directories on it through your USB interface with your computer.

What seems to be more dangerous for memory cards is changing them when the camera is on. There is a special warning about that in my D100 manual.

Also never pull them out of the reader when the computer is writing to it.

G'day Corey
I think you will find you have the same problem i did.
Off to Canon and have a chat to the tech's and they will do some work on your camera to fix it.
Its some kind of intermittent problem on the 10D i had.
When you press the shutter after turning on after the third to eighth pic you get the error 99.
The mirror moves but the shutter does not.Locking the camera.
After it did it once i was right for the rest of the day or until i turned the camera off for more than 2 hrs.
Then it would reappear.
Started off as once a week now its once or twice a day.
Get em to check it out.
All the best
Darren Howie

Hey all thanks for the assistance. Well Darren thats exactly what happened, I thought it was a card issue because thats the only step(removing the card) that cleared the problem. I hope I don't have to send it back. I do think either way that I will reformat the card after every use. Again thanks to all for your always helpful and informative responses.

Hi Corey
It could also be a power issue so clean your contacts on your battery or vert grip if you use one.
That was the first thing the techs checked on mine.
Hoe all goes well.
