What Would Make A Good Selection Of Fixed Lenses

Sat Feb 21, 2004 5:50 pm

Hi guys.

Been purusing some of the used photo places looking for lenses for my screwmount Pentax and Zenit.

Anyway, started wondering what a good selection of fixed lenses would be.

Just added a 135mm to my allready existant 300, 55,50 and 28 lenses.

Any other ideas about what holes should be next to be filled. an 85 or 105 perhaps?

But lets make the topic a bit bigger then that.

If you where going to build up an assortment of fixed lenses what would be you top three or five picks as far as focal length goes.

In answer to your first question, I'd go for the 85mm ... it has a very pleasing look, and because you can usually get pretty fast glass, you can get some lovely restricted DOF effects.

OK 5 lenses (I'm not even going to attempt just 3!)

14mm (but NOT fisheye)
35mm (nice candid/walkaround lens)
85mm
300mm
500mm (or the longest I can handhold!)

Cheers,

If we are talking canon primes then it would be...

Canon 14mmL
Canon 20/24/28... not sure which
Canon 50mm F1.4
Canon 85mmF1.2L
Canon 135mmF2L
Canon 200F1.8L
Canon 300F2.8LIS
And either a canon 400mmF4DO/500mmF4LIS/400mmF2.8LIS

But in the real world i'll proberbly stick with my 15F2.8Fish/17-40F4L/50F1.4/70-200F4 soon to be replaced by the F2.8IS and my 100-400LIS.

I think out of all there lenses the 135F2L and the 300F2.8L have the best bokeh of the lot, it's just so creamy and wow!!! The 85F1.2L aint bad either!!!

Yeah, 85 or 105 seem to be the two lenses that I would be most interesting in getting next.

I also need to find a 50mm that has better glass in it, mine has had a rough life with a previous owner.
