book a ticket and hijack the aircraft at the gate to let you out on the runway, then run like hell before the police catch you.

Sam Chui its a Photographer, he travels all around the world taking airplane pictures, he contacts the Airport's Management Office or the Aviation Administration and due to his experience he can get acces to it.

I know this because he came to Chile (my country) and he took couple of pictures at SCL, a friend of mine went with him.

No, my name is Brian Futterman, not Phil Derner.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I don't think Sam has good, or even great connections that get him all this access--could definately be wrong though. I know some people in 'pretty high' (or I may just be trying to feel special) places that can't/won't give me diddly squat. I'm getting the jist that Sam, like Joe Pries and a few others, are 'professional' aviation photographers. Let it come from the horse's mouth, though!

If you take a look at Jay Selman's photos from MIA he obviously has ramp access but I don't think he actually works on the ramp. They allow him to use a US Airways truck to cruise around and I'm pretty sure he is allowed to bring buddies (or maybe just some exceptions). Again, I don't want to speak for anyone but when Joe Pries visits MIA he has a friend that is a great photographer and is/was high up at MIA so that certainly helps. I'm not positive on the actual relationships and positions but the point is in some cases it is having long time friends.

Ryan Kaskel - Waiting to be corrected...

Sending a letter to the Airport Administration may helps a lot.

I sent one to the Tocumen Airport Administrator and she gave me the permission for the ramp access. I also wrote that I was working for FLAP Magazine from Brazil.

mechs and rampies are not usually allowed on taxiways and runways. In fact, noone is allowed there without due business (which is defined by belonging there or in some places paying enough).

And even if they are, most airports and companies have policies banning them from carrying cameras on the job.

Actually I do not know of any airline or airport in the US that has a policy about carrying cameras on the job. Usually the only way to get out by the runway is with airport OPS. I don't remember if Jay still works for US Air or not but if he does not, then one of our friend there has been taking him out which is cool.
