SOU: Could Someone Recommend A Reasonable Spot?

Wed Mar 03, 2004 5:30 am

I'm new to A-net (and aviation photography) and I wondered if anyone could recommend a good location for photography at Southampton. I live, ironically, under one of the departure routes, and work right under the approach for rwy 02, but it's totally impractical for me to even attempt some pictures.

I've got my mitts on a half decent Sigma 100-300mm lens, and I'm itching to have a go with it!

Fencing and persistent security have made the best spots difficult in recent months. The top of the car park is ideal, BUT you'll need a narrow lens to poke through the fencing and you'll be chased off in short order.

The best alternate is the raised mound along side the railway track towards the long term car park ... 300mm is about right. Note this is afternoon only as otherwise you're shooting into the sun.

The other option for 02 arrivals are the fields around Mansbridge - there is an empty field by Itchen View which should be OK with your lens, or you can follow the Itchen trail up to the motorway and take close head on shots by the approach lights.

Oh yes, the cemetery in Mansbrige is pretty good .. if you don't mind the company  Smile

Thanks. I'll have a look around when I get a mo - I don't have transport so it sounds like the hill near the railway would be best for me. I'll have to wonder up there at some point and take a look.

I used the airport to go to Malaga back in June, and I was disappointed to see that there was only an indoor viewing area that overlooked the ramp (pretty sure you know it) with some fairly thick glass.

I work in St. Marys, and occasionally (when I've been outside, and the aircraft using 02 have actually ended up right overhead) I've had the most brilliant views - there is some building work taking place which has resulted in a bit of open space.

If you like overhead, you should wander up to Bitterne Park, to the top of the hill sometime - you can see why some of the locals complain!

You should speak to Justin, aka JKW777, he lives right by SOU and has some good pics of it!

The observation desk is also another option, although shooting through glass has problems! I live in Fareham, not far away, and can second all the positions above.

I find it a shame that the car park is out of bounds, although you can take shots if you stay close to your car.

This is my first post! I finally plucked up the courage  Smile

Chris Sharps,

Thanks for plugging my pics  Big thumbs up

There are a few spots mentioned above which I visit regularly.

Car Park:

It is situated opposite the terminal, walk in, turn left and you will see two lifts. Jump in one and hit the top floor button. (Which is 2 I think  Laugh out loud) Walk out when it stops and turn right, you will see the airfield now. Keep walking and approach the fence and you should be faced with a few aircraft. The only problem is the fence they have put up, so many shots ruined due to it. So getting those ones above where pretty hard  Sad

The Mound:

This place is a 5-10 minute walk. Come out of the terminal, turn left walk until you hit the road crossing. Cross the road and head to the right. It is a very long stretch of road but if you keep following it up and you will come to a bend, follow the bend and look immediately to your left and there will be a grass hill. Now breathe in, and climb the hill. Turn around, wow!  Smile Only problem with this place is the sun is in an arkward position. But not too bad in the summer so I am told!

If you are in the area on a Saturday or Sunday drop me an e-mail. I will be happy to meet up!

Colin,

What road in Bitterne is it? Sounds good to me.

Thanks,

Justin  Big thumbs up

Edit: I have not had any problems with the BAA Staff on the car park to date!?!

Hello,
I will fly to SOU next week Sunday (14MAR), on Eastern's Saab 2000 from NCL. Scheduled arrival is around 1800h, so probably to late to get some photos?

Tom

Justin - there is a road (Dell Road I think) which runs alongside a school in Bitterne Park. From the top of that you can actually look down on the airport, and, with a long lens, shoot down on aircraft approaching 02. But anywhere around there should give you good approach shots if you can find an angle free of trees/houses.

Cheers,

Colin

Hi again folks,

when approximately is sunset these days in SOU? I guess 18:30ish will be too late for some action photography? So on 14thMAR I would be up for some night photos (if possible) and maybe a pint or two afterwards. Still have to get somehow by train from SOU to Milton Keynes though...

If anyone's around next Sunday evening, please drop me a mail via the contact fundtion in my profile.

Cheers,

Tom

I'm not sure exactly when sunset is, but it will be pretty dim by 1830. If you need to get to Milton Keynes, you've probably got a limited window, thanks to our wonderful rail system. Here's a link to the online timetable:

OK folks,
instead of being limited by a rail schedule, I have hired a car to get from SOU to Milton Keynes in the evening. So if anybody is still there after the arrival of the Eastern Saab 2000 I would be up for a meeting. No beer for me though...that's the drawback of the rental car.

How about arranging this again? Shame it wasn't today - the weather's gorgeous, still, that's life!  Smile

I'm actually on leave this week, with the exception of Wednesday when I'm travelling, so I can do any day. Let me know if you want to meet up!

Cheers
