So......who Are The New Screeners?

Thu Mar 04, 2004 6:13 am

Got my confirmation and to my suprise they had hired new screeners "Photo was processed by a screener in training". About time we added some new people. How were they chosen since no emails we're sent out?

Also which screener shoot slides actively? Any experience with screening slide..sure it cannot be the same rules apply with digital shots.

It's nice to get a rejection from someone new for a change. This proves however that there is consistency between the screeners.

If your not happy with a rejection from the new screeners then just appeal it, no need to make a big fuss about it.

Remember as the message on the email says they are in training.

I did.
But I actually have a high views/picture ratio because of the screeners. You really do weed the right ones out. So I'm not complaining. Hence the big grin at the end of my last message.

What big fuss were you referring to?

Grant:

Well, the Zoom 767 shot is a nice image, but it is not level:
http://airliners.net/procphotos/rejphoto.main?filename=Zoom767C-GZMM022704.jpg

I'd suggest giving the image a slight CCW turn, and perhaps(?) clean the blue lens reflection in the centre of the image.

Just for the record, it was not a trainee screener who rejected that shot.

Belarus...dad says it's in the former Soviet Union...
Zvereva...doesn't sound asian, so forget the gal on the right.
The lady on the left doesn't seem to be 21-25 (trying to be nice  Smile/happy/getting dizzy), so due to process of elimination...

I say Tamsin Zvereva is the one in the middle! I think we're invading her privacy, dissecting her info and...achem...inviting her to Elbonia IF she's hot.

So, before Sam, 707 and UTA, I have first dibs.  Big thumbs up jk, she's a little old for me anyway. I feel so evil.  Acting devilish Did I offend you?  Nuts

Maybe they're going through a trial period and there exists a possibility they might might not make the grade? Go on, pure conjecture on my part and probably not very helpful as I'm sure they're all going to be fantastic at the job.

Give 'em a chance folks... they'll make themselves be known as and when they're ready.

Cheers!

Hi there,
Representing the north I have been an aviation enthusiast and photographer since many many years (more than 20 years). My main interest is in airliners though I was flying general aviation planes when I was younger until I ran out of money. Living outside Stockholm most of my pictures are from Stockholm - Arlanda Airport just 7 minutes drive from my home.

Having just returned home from two weeks on GCM Sam sent me this topic to read and I have to respond to Panaman message above ...

Like everyone else I wait in the queue too! With it running in the 4 to 6k range the past few months I've waited a long time for that first one to get screened, but by then I've added quite a few so they all get added together. And, I've gotten my fair share of rejections also, from both the old-line screeners and the newbies.

I do have to add that there is one thing wrong with the new screeners ... the suggestion that we appeal those shots that we don't agree with. Unfortunately the appeal function is virtually useless. First of all you are only allowed two pictures in the appeal queue and, more importantly, you wait forever for Johan to review them. My last SXM shot (shameless plug) below ...

was rejected over two months ago as "bad centered" and I appealed it. And it sat there over two months waiting for Johan to add it. So, by the time he reviews them and notifies a new screener that they might be doing something wrong, well, two months later isn't good. (I don't believe that one was screened by a newbie by-the-way, but if we're appealing them they'd suffer the same fate.)

perfect example: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=532621

this photo is about the worst one I have seen for a long time but it gets uploaded. I have seen 400x better examples rejected and posted here for review. While this person is not Art Bell or VIR380 sorry did not mean to exclude you.  Smile why would someone accept it? You can barely make out which airliner it is. Yes I have had a few rejected but some that have made it to other sites (jetphoto) have been rejected here. And don't say oh well they take everything I have seen a few rejected that were pretty damn good.

Panaman,

I not always quality... otherwise there would be a lot missing.
Quality versus Database Content versus unique.

This shot was unique, and despite the terrible quality - was accepted on this basis.

--

Art,

We're not as tight on angle or centred as we used to be. But (not to patronise, simply to have it stated for benefit of others) it is something that is totally controlled by the photographer whilst taking the shot and editing.
And in your case, it would have ruined the aspect ratio for a re-crop no doubt. Worth overlooking maybe for such a unique shot - but for a standard everyday shot.... no chance.

It's interesting what you wrote in your note above and, for the most part, I agree with you. I know, though, sometimes the rejections I've gotten tell me that whoever did the screening has forgotten the "photography" part of the equation and concentrated only on the aircraft part. The picture tells a story and sometimes that story includes more than just the aircraft. I think that AF shot is probably a good example of that. Recropping to make the aircraft go frame to frame would have killed it with the same ratio as you stated. And yes, we do have some control, but not always enough. In that same picture I knew the girls were there and guessed that I'd have enough wide angle to catch thier whole body, not just from the butt down, but coming across your view at 140mph you don't have much time to react. I wholeheartedly agree with what you say about a standard type shot. Just take a look at other shots of mine accepted from SXM and you'll see that when the story isn't there or it isn't as unique, the plane pretty much fills the frame.

I believed the shot was good enough as it was which is why I appealed it. And I hate doing that. To have something sit in limbo for months isn't my idea of a picnic. But in this case the wait was worth it. I got to tell my story exactly the way I wanted to tell it.

Art I have to agree with you, sometimes I get the feeling that the screeners sometimes forget the er ahem, art of photography like the rule of thirds. Your pic works to the rule of thirds but to be honest ,from my point of view it is too tightly croped. But I think that is the problem.Everybody will have their own tastes on what makes a good shot and the screeners too. Maybe there should be another person doing appeals too as 2 months seems a bit long for a "judgement" on what gets accepted/rejected
