Would Photo Quality On An EOS Be Good With This?

Thu Mar 11, 2004 12:45 pm

Now, I am reconsidering selling my http://www.vivitar.com/Products/Lenses/lensmanl.html#600-1000mm

Because it DOES WORK with Canon EOS cameras (like the 300D?) And am wondering what the image quality would be like. It is MF and the info is:

600-1000 (~2000) mm Super Telephoto Zoom Lens with 2X Teleconvertor

• Series 1 aspherical optics
• Smooth one-touch zoom control
• Multi-coated elements for reduced flare and increased light transmission
• f/9.9, 600 mm
• f/16, 1000 mm
• Accessory size: 72 mm
• Aperture Range: f/9.9-22
• Minimum Focusing distance: 4.4 Meters
• T-mount compatible
• Lens Body (only) SKU 60000
• Five year warranty

600 - 1000 mm adapters:
Camera SKU
Canon EOS 211889
Canon C/FD 211881
Minolta M/MD 211882
Minolta Maxxum 211890
Nikon 211883
Olympus 211884
Pentax-Ricoh 211885
Yashica-Contax 211887

Will the quality be awesome or shit?

Any info appreciated as always.

Cheers

I would not touch it. It is a tempting phenomenon, but it strike back and bite!!

These lenses are sold cheaply and are toys, especially when used on a camera as good as the 300D. The MF doesn't work well, and the f9.9-22 is going to limit you just a *bit*.

Seriously, I wouldn't waste any money on it. There is a reason people pay $1000 for a 300mm lens or $7000 for a 600mm f4.

Buy it if you want, and you will have the experience to warn the next guy  Big grin

Totally agree with Ken.
The minute I see max aperture smaller than 5.6... I'm a little more than wary.
Why bother going more than 500mm?
We're taking shots of aircraft, not spacecraft.

Once again folks, you've not actually read Martin's post properly... he's not buying this lens, he's already got it and was considering selling it before. Now that he's found out it will work with EOS (with a suitable adaptor) the question is not "Should I buy it?" but "now that I'm keeping it will the results be any good?"

Martin, I'm no expert here mate and I've never used that lens but from what was discussed before I don't think it has image stabilisation so trying to shoot a moving aircraft with a 1000mm lens hendheld is going to be a nightmare!  Wink/being sarcastic

I think the real use for such a lens is on a tripod shooting distant (or very small) birds.

Still, you've got the lens, the adaptor isn't that expensive, so you've got nothing to lose. Try it out see what results you get and make an informed decision! Good Luck!

Cheers!

I would sell it and get something a bit more practical.

Oh I get it Chief. From what I see on this board, its safe to say that 90% of Nikon users in the world are jerks. Nikon users think their cameras are God's gift to the world of photography. I know Nikon is a good camera. Then again I am a Minolta turned Canon user who thinks outside the box. The Non-Nikon users are level headed. We think clearly and logically.

Also, you are so full of one liners, its not hard to tell you are a retired chief. "Do this now". Etc, Etc, Etc.  Big thumbs up

It goes both ways. I can see why some people might think all 300D owners are a bunch of immature noobs who can't understand why anyone would have the nerve to reject one of their photos.

As I myself am a 300D owner, that sucks.

"Man, if you ever come to Seattle there's going to be a hanging, Chad."

Just a demonstration of that particular Nikon user's maturity level.  Insane
I'd rather shoot BAD_MOTIVE

"...I can see why some people might think all 300D owners are a bunch of immature noobs...

Most are sincere, and work hard to make the most of the new tool in their "photography tool box".

But some have a lot to learn, in more ways then one.
