When you save a file in tiff there is no loss. Jpeg has some lossy and is called lossy.....Artie

A TIFF file is much larger and contains more information than the Jpeg. As Artie pointed out Jpeg uses lossy compression which takes out some of the information and through some sort of coded magic fills in the voids...

For editing purposes you are best off with as much information in the file as possible. That gives you the most leeway in cropping and editing.

For Anet purposes a high quality JPEG is usually okay to start with, tho as I have learned more about editing I prefer the big TIFF files that I get from Canon RAW format.

I now shoot everything in RAW, pull out a medium JPEG for reference and only convert to TIFF those files that I want to edit. I then save the RAW files to a cd along with the ultimate edited JPEG that went to anet or other site.

Tony,
I have a question.

This past weekend I shot HQ JPEG and RAW. Typically, with the JPEG shots, after processing, my photo size is roughly 700-900kb. Now, with the RAW photos, I convert them to TIFF, then fix them up, and save them as JPEG. My file size is 400-500kb. What am I doing wrong? Shouldnt the file sizes be the same?
