Slide Scanner Recommendations

Sat Mar 20, 2004 11:54 am

Hi gang,

I am ready to buy a new slide scanner. Budget is $500.00 at most.
Any thoughts? I just can't afford a Nikon one for $1500.00 !!

I know a few on this site have used Acer scanners in the past.

I am not interested in the HP Photo Smart. Been there, done that.
Not happy with it...........

Thanks!

Hi Jay,

I would take a closer look at the Minolta Scan Dual IV (US$ 300). I have the Scan Dual II and it still delivers great results although the quality slowly goes down (not surprising as it is already three years old and heavily used). The successors Scan Dual has a higher resolution (3200dpi) than its predecessors and is said to deliver a better image quality.

I'm currently looking at a replacement for my Scan Dual II and narrowed my search to the Scan Dual IV and the Nikon Coolscan V (US$ 600) which also might be an option for you. I'm currently trying to figure out whether the extra price is justified for the higher image quality ...

I am also looking for a new scanner that can do slides and negatives. My HP Photosmart S20 is having a hard time lately.

Minolta and Nikon are making scanners. The price range start at $500.00 to $1600.00 CAD.

I am not sure which one to buy yet, my budget is between $500.00 to $1000.00 CAD.

What about the Acer scanner? I know Mike McLaughlin and Carlos Borda in the past owned this model. I think Acer got bought out by Berq, not sure if I am spelling it correctly, but is that scanner still an option?

Thanks!

Jay,

Had a similar topic the other day as I am looking for a good slide scanner myself having used an Epson 1650 Perfection with the built in flatbed light.
Good, but no way could anything get onto this site with it.
A gentleman from the UK mentioned the Minolta as well. It's around 289 at B&H right now and he said that you can scan 4 slides at the same time, has a dust removal system built in (if the dust can't come off, you can edit as well),
comes with Photoshop (I think that's the program) and he says that the quality is really good.
I asked others about the Benq product line and the response I got was to go for the name brands that make camera products, such as Nikon, Minolta or Canon. The Canon one I saw is around $499, however I don't think it's compatible with Windows XP...

Regards
Jeffrey

Jeffrey,

the dust removal system of the Minolta Scan Dual IV is said to be one of the worst around, so I would indeed prefer removing the dust manually. And of course not the full version of Photoshop is supplied, instead one of the "light" versions (Photoshop 5.0 LE or Photoshop Elements) comes with the scanner.

FUAirliner,

Thanks for the heads-up. I would remove the dust myself as well, just threw that tidbit in as someone had notified me about the feature. Also appreciate the info about the program that comes with the scanner.
What do you think about the scanner itself, if you use it?

I bought a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual 3 last summer and started to scan
all my pictures from scratch again (had them previously scanned with a
flatbed scanner). When I compare the results from my Dual 3 scanner
with photo CD:s which I previously once in a while ordered from the
photo shop I must say that I am very pleased with the Minolta scanner.
Some pictures on the photo CD are better but half of them I think is
better with the Minolta.

p.s. I am scanning negatives.

I got some information today for a Minolta Scan Dual IV and the price seem to be reasonable at $470.00 CAD.

It can scan slides or negatives.

If I can scan four at a time, that would be great!
I used my friend's Nikon this weekend and it took forever.

Great scanner and it cost around $1500.00 but it took fover to scan
a slide............

Any other thoughts on the Minolta?

Any word on the Acer????

I've been using the Minolta Scan Dual 2 for two and a half years now. Probably done about 2-3000 scans. I've been pleased with the results considering the price I paid for it. Lately I've started to get two parallell stripes across the scans, one magenta and one cyan. Goes away after a scanner restart. Asked minolta about it and they said it probably needs repairing. As long as it only happens sometimes I won't bother spending money fixing it. Haven't heard about anyone else having the same problems so I might just have a bad example.

Despite this I don't think it would stop me from buying a minolta again. There are better ones, but they cost more.

I got a SmartScan 3600 last summer,
It was almost $500.00 USD including tax.
Very happy with it, but not sure if I'll keep it now that I have my 300D

Jeffrey,

I use a Minolta Scan Dual II which doesn't even have the dust removal system.

Here are a two examples scanned with that machine:

IMO it gives the best quality for its price. And remember that the Scan Dual IV is cheaper than the Scan Dual II was although it has a higher resolution.
