Confused About This Rejected Shot

Sun Mar 21, 2004 4:24 am

Hey guys,

I got this rejection this morning and it was because the photo looked overall too dark. I can't understand how this makes any sense because it certainly doesn't look dark to me. Shooting it with good morning sun backs up even further.

Anyways here is the so called "dark" photo.

Now I understand in cases such as this:

Can anybody clarify this?

Thanks.

Hi Bo,

I think it is indeed a little too dark. While your highlights are right up at the edge of your histogram, your contrast is a bit too much causing the majority of the photo to fall too far to the left. I would also suggest that there needs to be a bit more space off the nose of the aircraft. Otherwise it is a fine photo. If you have the original photo little less tightly cropped, I think it is completely salvageable.

Later,

Ken

It's definitely not a "baddark". The problem is contrast. Avoid shooting when the sun is too high in the sky.

Hi Bo

A nice image but on the dark side.

I am pretty sure you will be able to fix this.

Cheers

A contrast problem, take a loot at the gear. That's maybe why the screener called it baddark

Ken, Hisham, Gary and Karlok: Thanks for your advices.
Honestly, I still find that the rejected photo looks fine on my computer and even confirmed that result when I showed it to other photographers. I just can't see why it appears dark to you guys.

But I spent a few minutes in Photoshop and adjusted the brightness/contrast, exposure curves, levels and I toned up the image. To me it appears a little brighter but maybe it may just do the trick to get in on the next upload.

This is the link where the improved version is.

Before reupload, remove the dusk in top of the image in the clouds, and some weird dusk below the tail.

Great..

Now it got rejected for low quality. What a waste, really I am very dissapointed.
