Profile dimension wise of the CF Type I or II has no differences. The only difference is their thickness. Non-Volatile memory still remains in a Type I state and company like Lexar now has 8GB CF Type I. Type II, like Type I, is thicker in demension and it is mainly designed to house a mechanical micro-hardrive as was first produced by IBM 340MB (Microdrive). Type II is not just designed to house microdrive but left open for future expansion to non-volatile memory also.

Hi ArmitageShanks,

Good purchase... I have D70 myself and have been totally satisfied with the performance.

As for the memory card, CF type I cards are typically more expensive per MB compared to CF type II cards. The advantages of type I is that it is faster (in general) and it can more shock proof, since it's doesn't contain moving mechanical parts like type II. CF type II cards are basically optical hard disk like the ones you will find in your computer, but much smaller.

For more info about CF cards performance on D70, you can look at this page :

Personally I use Hitachi 4GB Microdrive, although fellow advanced photographers that I know kinda discouraged me of using microdrive. But from the webpage above, you can see even the "slow" performace of the microdrive on D70 is actually on par with the high performance CF type I on other cameras like D100, 10D and 300D. FYI, SanDisk Ultra II 1GB in Singapore cost S$488 (divide by 1.7 for US$). The Hitachi 4GB Microdrive cost S$800, but I bought a Creative MuVo2 4GB MP3 player for S$419, opened it and took the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive in it, replaced it with my old SanDisk 128MB. So with savings of S$381, I have a 4GB Microdrive and a 128MB MP3 Player. You can go to this webpage for more infor how to get cheap 4GB Microdrive

I use two 512MB Sandisk Ultra II cards, they work like a dream. Write speed is incredible. Also, when deleting the images, I think I had managed to fill about 400MB of the card, pressed delete when it was time to scrub them, and within 2 seconds, full card use again...WOW! Better than the Smartmedia I had been using with my Fuji S1 Big grin

Full frame always beats post processing

I'm also using 512MB Sandisk Ultra II card. (People were recommending it at I can't compare it to any other cards beside Lexar 128mb which is also fast.

Andy, you delete your images from the card? Why not formatting?

Sandisk Ultra II CF cards are CF type I. Ultra II series is the improvement over the original Ultra series, but still retain the CF type I format.
