Attn DEN Photographers...

Wed Mar 31, 2004 12:34 pm

Anyone going out to photograph that F9 A319 + F16 ('s) flyover at Coors Field on April 12?

Would definitely be a rare shot for the database.

Dude, where did you hear about this? Seriously I think you just took all the DEN crew by surprise with this one (except maybe, Tim). If the flyover is the usual one, West to East over the scoreboard then a quick left to avoid buildings, then photography might be a bit iffy unless you actually plan on being at the game. The only place I can think of for a decent shot is the Light Bulb supply that is just outside to the west (beyond left field, a couple of McGuire's homers have hit it), but you won't get good shots with the plane and the stadium.

But seriously, anyone who can get that?

Thinking about this event, I cant help but wonder if the A319 is doing the fly-over and the F16's are just escorting it. Since you say the buildings are very close, can you imagine the average Joe walking in the downtown area seeing an airliner flying that close to the city? At least with the Vipers, it might ease the minds of these type of people a bit.

Vitaly,

You are probably better off shooting it from outside the field as your view wont be limited as much as it would be in the stadium.

I was at the Holiday Bowl and 4 Jarine Hornets flew over, two were in afterburner. I sure do wish I would have had my camera for that one, but, my position might not have been the greatest for a photo.

The COANG F-16s do the fly overs for everything in Denver. Having a Frontier airbus is a bonus. Don't expect it so low that it will blow hats off people up top.

If I shoot it, it will be from somewhere outside the park so I can get the whole thing in, park and planes. I have no interest in baseball.

Ha! Geog1992... I remember those days. Probably my most boring class ever at CU. It was horrible!

I will be there one way or another... It has been a rumor for a few weeks but they just confirmed it on our employee site. Anyone know if that is a part 91 flight? Please let it be a part 91. If so I think they will need some extra weight on that bird to stay in trim.

As flyovers at Coors usually go, they usually come up over the scoreboard on the northwest side, overfly the outfield (center to rightfield), and out, banking away from the downtown skyline. If you were to get pictures from inside the park, the best place to be would be on the first base line, up high, around section 325. With a decent 50mm lens, it should make for an interesting shot.

Jeff, Where outside will you be shooting from? Lot A? I'll bet you can get crazy angles from lot A as the jet banks to the left, with downtown in the background.

Should be exciting to see the pics.

I thinking more like I-25, or one of those old loft apartment buildings... That will put the ball field and the city in the frame all at once, and late in the afternoon, the sun will be behind me or just off to the side.

Actually, Jeff, not too far out from the stadium (left field) and across the railyard their is that old loft, about halfway between the stadium and I-25. From there you might get a good picture, but if you are going for the stadium and the airplane in one shot, then from there all you will get is pretty much the stadium and Grizzwald's Ass. If I could get up there (damn I wish I could), I'd be either in lot A, the RTD lot above lot A, or possibly 22nd street.

From 22nd street you might be able to get a good shot of the plane while you are looking through the lighttowers.

Just a thought, and yes, as far as I know, cameras are allowed into Coors Field.

Safe to say the flyover will be just before the opening pitch, around 1600 or so? I'm going to be out there (not at Coors). I may do some scouting for good locations in the next few days.
Let me make sure I have the general flight track down. Typically, a flyover at Coors will be from the NW, over the field, and a left turnout to the north, or northwest probably? Should be a good show! Hope the weather cooperates.

Craig, when they come over the stadium, they usually come in from center field, pass over center and right field, then on over LODO making the turns to avoid downtown. If you are in the stands in rightfield, the planes will be almost directly above you.

Hope this helps you guys get some good stuff.

The shot I would like to get:

Seriously now. Spent the morning walking around Coors Field. One of the best spots in my opinion will be on the raised walkway on the north, northwest side, right over the railroad tracks. Wide angle lens a must..

Jeff, that shot above looks excellent, too bad if they actually tried that the plane would get a little to close to the buildings.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

But I can't wait to see the shots from your location. Too bad I live in Parker and have school until 2:30  Angry So I can't make it up there by gametime.

Ahh well.

Jeff - But not many have skipped school to watch planes fly over a game really low...

I'm no fan of baseball, but Skipping school for a nice A319 with a few F-16s is always nice.

I don't know what happened to it. I checked their Web Site and it listed the flyover time as 1:20.

Sun was directly overhead anyway, it would have been far better if it was a 4:05 start.

You can thank the TSA for my no show. I suspect you can also thank the TSA for the no show of the Frontier 'bus too!

Pretty bumbed about the whole thing as it would have been some great exposure for F9.

I would love to put in a few choice words for the Tards Searching Around but I will keep that to myself.

Hopefully they are voted out come November and we can get more realistic security procedures in place at that time.

Did anyone get any shots of the F-16s? I would love to see them!

I can't go into it really as I do not have all the facts but some very kind people at Frontier tried to get me in the jumpseat as an ACM for the ride since it would have been under Part91 FAA flight rules but the TSA wouldn't allow anyone else to go along except the Capt and FO.

As far as the reason for the F9 fly-over not happening, I can't comment on that. Pretty sad though as it would have been some great expusre for Frontier.

Oh well, thanks for keeping us safe TSA... Pr!cks!

Nicksair-
I was in Coors at the game, camera in hand, and the F9 A319 did flyover. It was prob about a half hour before the F19s, and it was WAY UP THERE. I had my camera out, but could barely see it. There were a bunch of clouds that were below the plane. I couldn't even tell which tail logo it had. I was not too happy about that one.

That was probably a normal approach into DIA.

If it was a flyover, they wouldn't put clouds between the jet and the fans.

Word around here is that we did do the fly-over, just way early. As said, it was about a half hour or more before scheduled.

I really don't see the point of telling people when it was going to be and then doing it at a different time. I suspect the stadium was still half empty at that point. I bet it did nothing else than freak people out at that time. If it happens with F-16s right after the national anthem people will expect something like that. Not randomly an hour before the game. I bet people in the buildings down town were freaking out when they saw that thing when it came early like that. Wonder how many ran for the stairs?

Oh well, I guess that was another marketing op that got fumbled away. Good idea but didn't quite workout in the end.

F9 does so much advertising around here anyway I dont think it makes much of a difference...hell, Im half expecting Folsom Field to become "Frontier Airlines Folsom Field" or "Folsom Field brought to you by Frontier Airlines" or "Frontier Airlines Field" or something along those lines...
