Pointers On SXM For Photography

Wed Apr 14, 2004 12:54 am

Just wanted to know if you all have any suggestions on when the best time to view planes coming in and where these amazing pictures are taken from. I see in most of the pics its on a beach.

Thanks

Best spot is Maho Beach. Most big aircraft come in from around 1pm to about 4 pm.

Point camera in general direction of aircraft, press shutter when aircraft is full frame.

I would say the biggest pointer would be to NOT get sand in your camera.

I have a question to add:

Can anyone with personal experience, having worn sunglasses, tell me what the jetblast may have felt like?

It's warm and it smells good. What does wearing sunglasses have to do with it?

Go to Maho Beach. Once you are there, wait until a plane looms on the horizon over the ocean and starts coming towards you. As the plane gets lower and lower until it looks like it is going to land ON the beach, it will become evident quite quickly where the best place to be is.

I'll be at SXM in a couple of weeks!

Oh yea, if you see another photographer there, try to stand a few yards instead of feet away from him, to get a different view of the aircraft.

Hey!

Best spots at SXM are at Sunset Bar and the beach itself. If you want to stand at the fence and feel the thrust wear snorkeling goggles. Sunglasses will blow away. Best thrust is from the 727'S, MD'S or other 3 holers. Some times the crew will stand on the brakes and throttle up giving an extra boost of sand and dust toward the fence.
Check out the whole SXM db for ideas. There is one shot that includes the whole perimeter of the Princess.
If you have time you will find new perspectives on SXM. The opportunities are endless. I can't wait to get back with some new glass.
Have a BLAST and share the dumpster!
