How Much Should I Charge ...

Thu Apr 22, 2004 5:15 pm

Perhaps an answer instead of a question for a change  Smile

Browsing the web, I came across this handy little price calculator:

http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

Sorry if its been posted before, but I thought it was so good, its worth repeating anyway. Now there should be no need to ask that question again!

Cheers,

Colin

Nice little calculator, thanx for the link Colin.
Do you think such rates are directly convertible in € or does that only applies for the US market?

Good question, for which I don't know the answer. The nice thing about this calculator is that it is based on what real photographers have actually been paid.

But you also need to keep in mind that these are prices based on stock agency fees - so there is a mark up to cover agency fees and overheads. If dealing directly, (ie - you have no overheads or agency fees) perhaps you should adjust your fee accordingly ... maybe by as much as 30%.

Speaking personally, I have never used a separate charging scale for US and Europe, but I do have many more US sales ... perhaps thats why  Smile

And of course, regardless of this calculator, remember that many magazines simply pay a fixed rate which is non-negotiable.

Cheers,

Colin

Sad thing is that what can really cut back those prices is that some photographers on this site will give away their work for free or next to nothing!  Sad

Very useful.
From my experience, professional customers are prepared to pay in these ranges. I've even had two cases where they paid more than I asked for because it was their standard rate!

But there are also those deal hunters, which, when you explain why you're asking for a certain amount, often turn rude or use the "I can get it for free from someone else" argument.

I always use this link as a reference for my prices:

http://www.fotografenfederatie.nl/rp/RP2003.pdf

This is the only link I can provide. 2004 prices can be found at
http://www.fotografenfederatie.nl
If you click on "Richtprijzen en BUR"

One limitation: it is in Dutch, but all prices are in EUR but with a bit of logical translation you can make out what it is about

Well, one strength of this calculator - especially if you choose to charge below agency rates - is you can give them the URL, let them work it out for themselves, and see what a bargain they're getting  Smile

Very nice tool indeed, even if it were only to get some sort of rough 'idea' how much one should charge a buyer.

Many of the photographers over here have no idea what they should ask for a specific request. The links mentioned above can be very helpful in sorting that issue out for the photographers.
