Error 99

Sat Apr 24, 2004 3:40 am

Hi guys,

Ive had my 300D for a few months now. Since a few weeks back, my camera seems to keep coming up with 'Error 99'

Ive tried differernt lenses. Although, I have seemed to notice that it is only in certain light conditions. (may be wrong though)

Ive looked the error message up in my manual and it simply says 'None of the Above'

What do you guys suggest I do, im really p*ssed off at the moment!

Cheers,
Simon  Sad

There's not much info here, but the problem does appear to have something to do with non-canon lenses (sigma) in bright light situations.

From the Canon Manual, pg. 35 paragraph 2:

Error 99 : You should have purchased a Nikon instead

Do a search on Google.com for "Canon 300D Error 99", you get a lot of hits. Seems to be problem with using Sigma lenses (you using a Sigma lens?)

Nope, not using a Sigma Lens,

I have a Tamron 300mm, Canon 200mm and Canon 80mm.

All seem to be doing the same.
As I said, it seems to appear in certain light conditions.

Well I guess I'm not the only one.
I do get a lot that err and it is on some special light conditions.
What I do to kind of repairing it is or to take a couple of manually focused shots or to change the ISO, also changing the lens and putting it back works.

I really hate that error and it always happens when the plane that I'm waiting for comes in.

I have a Canon lens but it is kind of old now... I'll be getting my new one shortly and hope that it really helps.

Anyways if somebody can help us out with it it would be great.

thanks

Hi Simon
Are you using the vertical grip.
I was having error 99's on my 10D and it was simply a dirty contact on my vertical grip.
Problem solved after 3 months of investigation.
Also if not clean your battery contacts as well.
Take it easy

I had the Error 99 problem on my 300D when I first bought it and borrowed an old 75-300 Canon lens from a friend just to try. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I believe it was that the brass contacts on the lens were quite worn/dirty and sometimes just by removing the lens and cleaning the contacts fixed it. But certainly not 100% reliable.

I have heard from various people that it can also occur when using a non Canon lens ie Sigma etc which may have to be re-chipped to make it compatible.

In the end I went and bought a brand new Canon 75-300IS and no problems at all since.

Hope this helps
