How Do I Fix From Soft To Nice Sharper Photos?

Sun Apr 25, 2004 9:28 pm

Hey Guys,

Every time, I uploaded my photos to two popular aviation websites...Airliners.net and Jetphotos.net. When I received an email from them and was told that my photos was too soft. Before I uploaded, I used the USM for my photos on my photoshop.

Here are what I used.
USM
Amount: 300%
Radius: 0.3%
Threshold: 59 Levels.

My question is for you guys...Did I do something wrong or just my head? :-( Since I have my Dell Flat-panel monitor in my home office. Is it no good for the photo editing?

When I saw the excellent BDL photos from BDL-based photographers (Corey, Paul & John...They are my good friends of mine) so, I got very, very jealous and upset. In my heart, I don't really understand why the screeners doesn't like my photos everytime I uploaded them to A.Net. It's really hurt so badly. Oh yes, really. At work, I showed my aviation photos on my HP iPAQ Pocket PC to my fellow workers and even my boss. They loved my photos and were very impressed my work. That's make me very happy and I had a big smile all day.  Laugh out loud

Many of you don't know that I am hearing impaired (deaf), I had some difficult understand to read the instructions on photoshop elements. (Sound like I don't know how to use the photoshop..Duh!) All I am saying is I don't blamed to the screeners for my "horrible photos". My goal is that I really wish the screener should give me a little break. That's all I am asking you.

And finally, I really appreciated if you guys give me some photoshop tips or make an improvement on my photos. It will means a lot to me.

Thank you,
John A. Perrotta

Hi John,

Just from reading your post the bit here Threshold: 59 Levels seems a little high. Try Threshold between 5 and 0 see if that helps.

I normally use:

Amount: 500%
Radius: 0.2%
Threshold: 0

The first time if needed, I do it a second time with the Amount set to: 300% or 200%.

But show us some of your soft photos.

If I use USM, I will normally run a few passes at 45-60/.2/1, making new layers after each pass to check for jaggies and erasing them before adding the next pass of USM.

I usually do:

500
.2
4-5

That usually does the trick, if they need a bit more, I do:

100
.2
3

I usually do:

500%
.2
0

Then I do it again.

200-400%
.2
0

But this is because I set the camera ability to sharpen to the lowest setting in the camera.

USM of 500% even with a radius of 0.3 is going to turn out too sharp. What I do is use a radius of 0.5 and, with one pass, use anywhere from 100 to 300 percent, depending on the photo. If the end result isn't pleasing, undo the last step and apply a different amount. The photos will turn out to be sharp enough for here yet not look over-sharpened.

It is always good to use polygonal lasso tool and apply different sharpening levels to different parts of picture.
