Best Southern/Midlands Airport For Photos

Thu Apr 29, 2004 6:56 pm

Thinking of doing a trip this weekend (weather permitting) to do some photography. Can anyone confirm apart from LHR what are the best airports in the south/Midlands for photos. I was thinking of Southampton or Birmingham. Can anyone give any tips....

Thanks
Simon.

Birmingham is good but you need to take a step ladder.

Are there any airport with viewing area's ???? Or at least somewhere you can park on very short finals (Like the huts on 27R at LHR) or near a taxi way ????

Thanks

SOU is OK from the hill alongside the runway up towards the long term carpark - but you will have to pay to park, there is no road parking at all.

Traffic is pretty light - around 5pm - 7pm on Sunday would be your best time, both for lighting and traffic. Usual regional types, mostly FlyBe and BA, but you might get a Trislander or two and perhaps some bizjets.

BOH - a number of good vantage points. The jet heritage museum has a picnic area near the runway threshold (but you have to pay to get in). BOH is a bit hit and miss - traffic is generally very low, but you do get some strange visitors and schemes as aircraft arrive for disposal or refurbishment. Occasional miltary traffic and cargo as well - but be prepared to see nothing!

Cheers,

Not alot then.....

Yep i know Manchester is the place to be.... But i was not planning on 6 hrs driving this weekend.... Its also Bank Holiday and im just not risking that long a drive with the possible traffic nightmares.

SOU and BOH sound ok. But the traffic seems next to nothing....

I may give LGW a go but then again theres not many places there where you can take photo's without hassle......

What about Stansted ????? Is that place still terrible for the photographer. The last time i went there it was to spot only. I pitched up by the fire station. Good for spotting but useless for photos. I seem to remember people under the approach but as i recall this was on a main road without any parking. Are there any changes here ????

As for Luton. Is this place still a no go ????

Sorry for all the questions. I have a good idea for spotting but on the photo side im a real newbie...

Thanks everyone

PS : I have my first 19 pictures in the que , so fingers crossed.

Well, if you want to try something a little different, on Monday there is
"Aero / Autojumble Fly-in & Classic Vehicle Rally Fly-in" at Popham (between Winchester & Basingstoke).

Usually this is quite a good event, and a great atmosphere - but there is a £5 admission. Recommended to anyone with a passing interest in GA or, for that matter, vintage/classic cars.

Cheers,

Hi all,

STN isnt very easy for photographers, although not impossible.

LTN has a nice spot by the runway

LGW if 08 ops good spots

LHR everyone knows

SOU from what I hear now photography is tough

BOH Movements wise it's slow, plenty of places around their airfield-better to combine SOU, BOH and if you fancy, QLA to see whats in as all are near-ish each other.

Looking at the weather though I would recommend being a lazy sod and watching sky sports all weekend with plenty of food and drink  Smile

LTN, is the place for photography IMO. Right next to the runway, the Police are the friendlist ive seen around an airport too.

Just as long as you like EasyJet pictures!

Or there is SEN, my local!  Big grin

Andy your right, EZY does get a bit repetitive after a while! But LTN does get some nice biz jets!

Fewer biz movements at LTN on a bank holiday weekend.

Yep have to agree.... Looking at the weather i may just take the advise and give it a rest for the weekend. I don't want to trudge all the way to LGW or STN to just end up with lots of soft pictures due to the dull weather !!!

Thing is i have just got my new 1.5 tele converter lens for my Fuji S7000 and i realy want to give it a try  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Maybe LHR would be best as its a new bit of kit for me so the photo's maybe a bit hit or miss until i get used to it. Better to cock up on a BA320 ,than a rare biz Jet !!!!

Any chance of a few directions for these TOP SPOTS at LGW/STN/LTN

Thanks all

Rez...... If i had enough money to fly to Manchester i would save it to upgrade my S7000 to a D300 with a 70-300 mm lens !!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Which im afraid at the moment is a LONG LONG way away !!!!!

Unless anyone on A.net wants to sell one for £100.00 (Wishfull thinking i think)

That's cos you're leaving it so late mate!  Wink/being sarcastic

I just booked a return flight from LGW to MAN on the 1st of August for a total cost of £57 incl. You go out on the first flight of the day and come back on the last flight.... perfect days spotting!  Big thumbs up

Cheers!

Bloody hell thats exspensive, only cost me £50 from LHR to MAN for the meet. Leaving at 7:10 and arriving back at 21:10 the next day!

Flying BMI  Big grin

What ive always wanted to know is, why do none of the LCC's fly to MAN from any of the London Airports, apart from LCY which is served by VLM.
