My First Contrail...

I have been trying to get a good contrail shot for about 2 years and I finally got one accepted. I was actually on the top of the Pinery down in Parker taking pictures of horses when I saw this thing cruising over. The cool thing is you can easily see the 3rd trail forming off of the APU on the shot and there is a bunch of condensation forming off of the wings getting left in the wake too!

Bad Jealousy... HA! good one. It was simple luck. I had 4 horses speeding by me when I took that shot. I'm just glad I didn't get trampled!

Speaking of, does anyone know of a site like this for horses or other animals? I would love to show off some horse pictures. Any mammals.net sites out there that anyone knows of?

Dude, where were you at the top of the pinery? Were you at the High Prarie equestrian center? That place is about 1/4th of a mile from my house.

Nice shot. We see those like that all the time over here.

No that is at the bottom of the Pinery. I was at the top at Kent Hill farm. Great views up there and some beautiful horses! Not every day can you get a shot on airliners from up in the Pinery! HA!

Ok, so you were more like a couple miles away,

If you go down to the lake on a good afternoon, high altitude jets abound. Probably 5 at a time, and good scenery on the ground in the late evening.

Quite possibly my favorite place to shoot, except of course the airport  Smile

Hi all

With new north Atlantic routings, trails are not as common over Aberdeen as they used to be:

The Northwest 747 shot is the sharpest trail shot I have gotten with the D30 and the Sigma 170-500.

I'll keep watching the skies!

Cheers

Kyle, your email wasn't accepting my response so here it is.

A lot of the traffic that goes out of LAX to Europe comes over DEN. We had a Swiss Air MD11 a while back at DEN due to a diversion. There is a Virgin 747 that goes over around the same time as that Qantas bird.

I used a 75-300mm IS on the 300D. The thing that made the difference was I was on top of the pinery which reduces significantly the amount of atmosphere between me and the 764 compared to if you stand in a lower area like downtown Denver. I think you can kind of compare it to the continentality effect but on a much smaller scale!

Thanks for the reply, just found this topic.

I have also seen what I believe to be a 340 (actually consulted TripIET for his advice on the contrail ^^) that sometimes comes over at around 2-2:30 in the afternoon on a routing that appears to be from LAX. I also found a 747 operating every once in a while out of DFW, I believe en route to ANC. And last but not least, CO flight 7 comes over every day on the IAH-NRT route at 11:30 or so.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Now, the second period has just started and the Sharks have scored, excuse me while I weep....

Tim, you only used a 75-300? I've been looking into a similar lens, IS of course. When I get it, my balcony will become home to many contrail shots, especially the late evening flights that head from europe to LAX!  Big thumbs up

Just a few more months and I'll be able to afford it  Sad

(Oh, & thanks to Mark [aka Tappan] & Vitaly [aka Vafi88] for their opinions on the previous rejection. After reworking it the quality is much better indeed.)

Hello all!
This is my first reply in any forum...This are my two contributions. Mallorca is not LAX so one has to see sometimes what is happening in the sky. Hopefully we get clear skies often.
