What Makes A Good Photographer In Your Eyes...

Sat May 08, 2004 2:11 am

Okay we all have our favourite photographers, For you what makes a good photographer? is it equipment, views, attitude, skill.
BTW, dont kiss anymore arse than you need to in this topic...  Big grin

For me its all down to attitude and skill. Even if someone has a great skill, they dont make one of my favourite photographers till I experience their attitude to photography...

How do you make up your mind about photographers...

I prefer photographers who will always search for new angles at popular airports such as LHR and MAN.

Equipment wise - People must renember, that you can get the crappest of shots with a £5000 DSLR!

For me, I couldn't care less about a persons attitude, background, training, equipment, etc. It is the end result that matters.

How do you experience the "attitude" of the photographers from all the wonderful shots in this database alone? And how would you know if a fantastic shot was skill or luck?

A good photographer visualizes and plans his shot and then he goes out and gets it right the first time. What equipment he uses doesn't matter, but whatever equipment he has got, he knows how to use. Most important though is that his photos are appealing, and that's very subjective.

I appreciate photographers with own styles. Even if I don't like that particular style of shooting I respect people whose shots you can instantly recognise.

Also anyone who can do a good slide, can't do wrong in my book.

The most important factor:

Personality

Even the best photographer is uninteresting if he's an *a..hole*. If his personality is right, you can look at his work. I would not want to have a spotter as colleague just because his work is good, he has to be a nice person.

I also like persons who like to try new things... At a large airport, you can always discover new spots and shoot at new angles... This is what photography is all about in my opinion.

Everybody can go to the same good old spot everyday and shoot the same angles... I'm getting bored rather quick when doing this.

So, exploring new angles and spots, this is a feature every top photographer should have  Smile

I totally agree that whomever it is, first off they have to be a nice person AND be able to take a joke and laugh at themselves!!!!!!! Everything else will come!!!! 99% of all spotters I have met have been great people, and we all have a common intrest so it is easy to get along! Every once in a great while you will meet someone who gaurds everything like it is a big secret!!!! WHY?????? One of the biggest thrills is to help someone get more out of the hobby!!!! I always find it funny when one of my overseas friends "freaks out" on a DL MD-88 or UA Airbus, but yet it puts into perspective how broad our hobby is!!!!!!! Just because I see a certain type or livery 1000 times doesn't mean that everyone does!!!!!! I'm sure they laugh at me clicking away at BA Airbus or LH planes while I am over there!!!! Point is we have a great time and I have learned volumes just by listening and watching!

I think there's a bit of a difference in what makes a pleasant spotting companion and a good photographer. Fact is, I've know some right miserable buggers who were great photographers - indeed, as is the case of many artists, perhaps it is the fact that they aren't good communicators in general that makes them so good at expressing them selves through their chosen medium.

Of course, I know some nice photographers as well  Smile

What makes a good photographer? Well I think the most important thing is the ability to see the image. Dump 2 people in a field, an empty street, wherever. The non-photographer will quickly become bored and frustrated. The photographer will start seeing pictures and create interesting images out of seemingly the most mundane material. Its a gift which some have, but I do think it can be at least partially aquired through practice and perserverance.

Cheers,

Colin

Couldn't agree more. Photography is a craft, not art.

Now it gets more interesting  Smile

I'd say photography is both - there are great photographers who (IMHO) are primarily brilliant craftsmen (I'd put Ansel Adams in that category). Others are artists with an ability to see the critical moment (Cartier-Bresson?) and create something significant from the mundane.

But its not an all or nothing thing - the craftsman must still be able to know what will make a good pic, and the artist must have the technical ability to realise his/her vision.

Cheers,

Colin

One who dares to try new ideas, angles and has creativity, and is not afraid of failure.
