Remark:
Fantastic head-on view of this Delta 767 reaching for the sky after liftoff from 25R in LAX. As always, an actual photo scanned from Kodachrome while flying in a special route for private aircraft over LAX.

As the picture caption explains, there's a corridor for GA aircraft passing just next to LAX (west I think).

If you happen to be on one of those flights with a nice view of LAX, have a good camera, an even better zoom (!) lens, good photography skills and a nice subject, you get a picture like this.

Look for a similar picture of Sam Chui.

Maybe 1,500ft above ground or something similar? Can't imagine the GA plane flying much higher... he would have needed very much zoom then, indeed.

Great image!

i doubt that they'd let you fly much lower than 1500 msl due to the departures climbing out of LAX and heading straight for you...since the VFR corridor isn't right over midfield (which it sometimes is, and that puts you out of everybody's way...arrivals, departures, etc)...i know if i was flying one of the airliners i wouldn't want to take off out of LAX and then suddenly be maneuvering to avoid some warriors or cherokees cuz you're in indian country...

1500 msl west of LAX might put you right in the path of departures, so they might keep you a bit higher than that....just my thoughts anyway...

yes, a good zoom is needed...

We are flying on a published LAX shoreline corridor route at 3500 feet, with most planes departing LAX at quite a distance at 500 feet or so and restricted to 1000 feet...so in most danger case you have 2500 feet between you, and of course you're cleared by the LAX control from long beach or Santa Monica/Hawthorne....Just let your camera and lens (and the brain) do all the work. All about is LUCK, anyone can fly over LAX on the published track at anytime, but to catch a heavy plane departure is something you can't control.

Shot with 400mm VR lens, (app.640mm on film SLR) and 20% cropping.

Actually that just part 1 of my photo shoot...keep your eye around for the next few weeks when I get them to stay at home.

If someone is seriously interested in doing this, you can contact me and I will pass the info to help. After all, there is trade secrets and enormous training for this kind of photo shoot.

I think that explains it pretty much. Except the
trade secrets.  Nuts  Confused  Big grin

Having flown and shot from the VFR cooridor above an airport... I deal out HUGE props to Derek and Sam. It's NOT easy whatsoever to nail a shot like they have, and that doesn't even include the noise and luck factor.

Anyone who thinks it's faked, well, faking it would be too easy.

THIS CAN'T BE TRUE.

"...an actual photo scanned from Kodachrome while flying..."

Or, if it is, why go through the trouble of developing and scanning the film in flight? What if chemicals get spilled in the aircraft or the electrical inverter fails?
 Big grin

Superb shot, Derek. (Sam's as well!)

He didn't develop it in flight, he just scanned it in flight, nothing strange about that..  Nuts  Wink/being sarcastic
