Help With Night Photography

Thu May 13, 2004 3:42 pm

I am experimenting with night photography. I am using a Nikon D100. The three photos below were taken with a 30-second exposure at F7.1.

The sky was PITCH BLACK, as these were taken at 12:30am. My camera is turning these shots into pseudo-daylight.

I want the clarity of the aircraft lights - but I want it to appear more like it was - night. I've tried post-processing these to death, but can't adjust the contrast, gamma or brightness to achieve an accurate night image.

Kev,

We were standing on the Arlington Memorial Bridge at the mid-point. Shots 1 and 2 were facing DCA, and shot 3 was facing Georgetown. The building on the right of shot 3 is the JFK Center.

I like the Pseudo daylight look. Those are nice pictures but there isnt much you can do to make it look like night post-processing. Just like you cant do that to a night image to make it look like day.

Close the aperture down more to get less light through the lense, a/c lights will then also be less intense.

Can you take full manual control of the camera? If yes, close down the aperture until it looks ok, you can do this anywhere to save a journey to an airport.
