1st A.net Photo From 1st Mi-24 Flight - 10 Yrs Ago

Sun May 16, 2004 12:04 am

Ten years ago this month, I chanced into a flight on a Czech Mi-24, certainly a treat for any aviation fan. It was especially memorable for me because, just 6 years earlier, I had flown a series of patrol flights along the West German/Czechoslovak border. Czech air defense forces almost always reacted to the flights, usually with Mi-24s or L-39s. Their role was to keep tabs on us and shoot/force us down in case we crossed the border. (And we frequently operated within a couple hundred meters of the border which, depending on terrain and vegetation, was often indiscernible.) So it was quite a change for me when Czech Mi-24s changed from something that regarded me as a target to a remarkable ride at an airshow!

So please forgive the self-plug, but this picture has always been a favorite of mine and was the first shot I submitted to Airliners.net. (However, my 100% acceptance rate was not destined to last long!)

Having 3 of the highest viewed helicopter pictures on this site, boasting more in the top 10 than anyone else, it's obvious everyone likes those pictures. Considering the quality of your 10 year old shots is equal to or better than many pictures shot today, my hat is off to you mate.

Side note: I still think you have the best remark for any picture in the database...

Thanks for the generously kind words, Mike. I certainly realize, however, that the most crucial of the many elements that must come together to result in a good picture is the opportunity to take the shot. I've been occasionally fortunate in that regard and have tried not to waste the opportunities.
Nonetheless, I'm also frequently jealous of those A.net contributors who regularly get to enjoy airline cockpit time, ramp access, tanker flights, spectacular locales, etc! The shots they produce are what make this site special.

Hey nice shots, who where you flying with over there?

Did you ever hear that story about the Apache and the MI-24 playing simons says with each other their respective sides of the line? Apparently the Apache finally did a manuver the MI couldn't follow and crashed.

L-188,
The border patrol flights were with the 4th Sq, 2nd Armored Cav Regiment out of Feucht AAF near Nurenberg and were definitely some of the most enjoyable and exciting flying I've done.

The border's somewhere in between this AH-1 and Mi-24:

Borivoj "Bob" Cech has more of my pictures and some video clips (at the bottom of the page) on this page http://www.vrtulnik.cz/mil/redcatchers.htm of his excellent (Czech-language, however) helicopter site http://www.vrtulnik.cz.

The Mi-24 crash you mentioned was the outcome of an encounter between a US Army AH-1 and a Soviet Mi-24 along the Inter-German border probably around the 1986-87 timeframe.

Ahh,

I was with HHC 11AVN out of Illesheim in 92-94

It was an Apache unit, so I suspect that that is where the US helicpoter probably changed types  Laugh out loud

Kind of like a fishing story.
