Rejection Help, Original Available For Playing

I need help, and lots of it. I am new to DSLRs and photographing aircraft. I recently purchased a 300D and started to take pictures at LHR. I have been inspired by the work I have seen on, and I getting to grips with the camera and post processing. I have had a couple of photos accepted and about 10 rejects. The latest one is from yesterday of the latest BMI A319 which I took yesterday morning at LHR. Problem is I am spalshing around in the pool without making much progress. So, I'd appreciate some help sorting out a photo I spent a couple of hours on last night that was rejected this morning. The aim of this post is to improve my photos and processing.

Now, I have put the original RAW file and a TIFF version on a FTP site that I have so you guys can have a look at the source files and perhaps point me in the right direction.

It has been rejected for badquality and badsoft. OK, the bad soft is due to me not using the USM enough - still learning this one, however, it is a 7 megapix image taken in bright sunlight, although the original is a little underexposed. However, by using my PS book and a bit of adjusting of levels, burning etc, I thought I had turned out a pretty good image!?!?!?. Obviously not.

The photo as submitted

Here is the original

The original source file is at the link below and is 6.26MB

I would appreciate any help as to where I am going wrong. As I am a beginner in the world of DSLRs and I know I am having problems with the 300D as there is no spot metering on it that I can get to work, I'd appreciate advice on this as well. Kick me while I'm down, I can take it.  Crying

I played around with your .RAW file and got this:

Using PS CS RAW editor, I changed your white balance to "daylight" and that made a nice improvment, nevertheless I use mine always on "auto". You must be more gentle with levels and a good application of "shadow/highlight" tool also benefits this image. Other that this I used also "Color Washer" and "Focal Blade" for color and sharpening adjustment.

But there is an initial "problem", this photo seems to be made in mid day with strong light from above, almost backlit, almost, these are not good light conditions to make photos.

Now I have a copy of PS CS, and I am wondering where I can find the "color wash" and "focal blade" filters are?

Badsoft and badscan can be tough. I don't think it's helped by the fact that it's a relatively common aircraft. I think the screeners are particularly stringent in cases like this. I caught the same aircraft from the other side and got badscan, so my advice would be to just keep working at it.

With most of these shots, I found that I had to be very careful to not be too trick with the levels on the underside of the aircraft. The temptation is to bring all that detail out, but it can look plain odd, and introduce alot of noise in the brightened areas.

Still, learning's the fun part, and I anticipate you'll have plenty of stuff in soon!
It takes a big man to admit they are wrong, and I am not a big man.

"Colorwash" and ""Focal Blade" are 3rd party plugins for Photoshop and must be purchased separately

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can give yourself a LOT more latitude for image adjustment if you work in 16bit mode instead of 8bit mode (ie. convert RAW to a 16bit tif, and only reduce to 8bit mode prior to saving)

In my opinion it is unfortunate that "colorwash" can only work on 8 bit images which greatly reduces its potential (FocalBalde works fine on 16 bit)
