I Finally Got An Offer... But I'm Confused!

Wed May 26, 2004 11:37 pm

Hey guys!

I finally got that email everyone loves to see pop into their mailbox.. but I have never heard of the company asking for the picture, and dont know where to begin!
--------------------------
Dear Mr Kaufman

My name is Jamie Brooks and I work in Marketing for an aircraft
parts/sales company in the UK. I really liked you picture and wanted to use
it as a backgound for a flyer I want to send to the operators informing
them of an engine thrust reverser we have for sale. Would it be
possible if I could use it?

Kind Regards,

Jamie Brooks

Help me!!!!! What should I ask for?

Hi Ben,

I have recently had a similar request and started by replying with the request for the quantity of leaflets they planned to produce. When they queried this I explained that my photographs are not royalty free and I wanted to estimate the fees. They lost interest at that point hoping for a freebie I guess. Maybe I take the wrong approach, but for most companies it's one hell of a lot cheaper to pay fees to you than hiring a photographer to get a similar shot.

I must admit that I am never sure what to charge, so I will look to this thread with interest.

What I can add is that this company do exist in the UK. I checked out the name on and they are based in Brighton on the South coast of England.

Regards
Martin

I'd never post an entire mail with the name of the sender in the forums, don't think it very professional to do that.

It's as professional as begging for free pictures.

Fair enough, then there is more than one way to read that mail.

One can, and I do, read it as a question asking if it is possible for him to use the photo, leaving it open for you to reply yes or no, or to quote him a price (which I would do after asking what size it would be printed at and what the printrun would be). He might turn it down, but at this point we don't know. Just play the ball and see what he replies and work on from there.

The other way you can read that message is that he wants it for free and draw the conclusion that he's not prepared to pay anything for it since he mentions nothing about money in his mail. Then you can reply to him by telling him to sod off and that he won't be getting any freebies from you. Case closed.

It's up to you how you read his request and you can reply in any way you want, but one of them involves an opportunity to earn some money while the other doesn't. You decide.

Thanks for the advice..

You want to hear something funny? In the US, when I hear Jaimie, I usually think of a woman... so in the reply, I stated "Dear Ms. Brooks"

Oy.

Staffan, sounds abit narrowminded to think that a nice reply = cash in the bank hehe. Usually - in all kinds of serious business - money is one of the most important issues and something you ask for right away when interested in buying something.
Ofcourse, a nice and respectful answer to all mails coming through airliners.net is preferred.

This was my reply...

First, let me say that I'm excited to hear that you enjoy my photography! I did some research into AVTRADE and the company sounds solid, dependable and very in touch with the aviation industry- it is always great to see all of these different, yet thriving, aviation related business from all over the world.

I do not generally allow usage of my photographs for free, however, compensation does not have to come in the form of money. What I would like to know is 1) How many copies are you making of the flyer and 2) What operators are receiving the flyer.

The most important thing, if I do allow usage, is that the photo must be appropriately credited with "Ben Kaufman- Airliners.net"... compensation comes second, however, I would appreciate in hearing what kinds of things you might be able to offer- I repeat it most certainly does not have to be money.

Thanks again for your interest, and please let me know either way, how you would like to proceed!

I don't think it sounds narrow minded at all. That's how business leads work, don't assume anything and don't expect all leads to turn into deals.

I went to the following site, and punched in the usage questions and $275 was a low for that usage. I think it may be a little high, but it gives you an idea. I've used this before with success. But they have to be willing to pay in the first place.

Bill

Thanks a lot- if they are willing to compensate in the form of money, I will link them to that webpage!
