DEN Guys, Would This Be OK?

Fri May 28, 2004 6:41 am

Ok, I'm planning to do some sunset shots around DEN on friday, and one of the things I was planning would be this:

Going out on Imboden about a mile directly off the end of 26/8, and getting a picture of the sunset over the mountains, with an a/c landing or departing and possibly the tower and terminal off to the left of the pic, depending on what I see in the viewfinder at the time of the shot  Smile

Anyway, I know that the area just south of 8/26 is off limits, I won't be heading there, I was just curious as to if the area I'm talking about is off-limits as well. I would think that because Imboden Rd. is in Adams County, I should be ok, but I would like to know for sure before I accidentally F*ck things up for everybody, because I definitely don't want to do that.

any info would be appreciated, thanks

I don't see how you can include the a/c, mountains and the terminal all in one shot spotting from South side of 8/26...

I believe North side isn't marked, and there are some hills that prevent security from seeing you, although you won't get the sunset you really want. If you go right to the end of the runway, I'm afraid you're not going to see the runway or what's taking off/landing on it... You can always try is from the same angle you shot that US Airways shot (just not with the same camera, please) provided it wasn't taken from South side of 8/26...

Just my opinion, you might want to check with the people who have been there in the past few months/weeks...

BTW - I'm getting my license tomorrow so my time has come for joining in some quality, relaxing spotting...

You may draw some attention being back there close to dark, having seen your previous attempts, I woud stick to daylight.

Vitaly,

Any chance you could join me tomorrow? Meet at Conoco at say 6pm?

I don't plan on getting the shot right as the plane touches down or lifts off, I'll probably get it as it is clearing the hills. I took the now infamous US-Airways shot directly south of the threshold of 26.

Jeff:

Thanks for the advice, I'll be up there earlier, so I'll have all the daylight shots I can ever ask for  Smile

After tomorrow I don't know when I'll be able to get up next until at least July, my work has decided that since I'm off school I should be able to work 40 hour weeks. Oh well, make a buck I guess.

Imboden Road is way off the airport property. They won't care about you, let alone see you way up there. I know where you are thinking about, the little rise on Imboden that is just north of the extended CL of Rwy 8 that gives a view of the entire runway. It could be a decent spot for sunset shots, although nothing A.net worhty due to distance.

Jason - some great potential with those APA pics. Do you have Photoshop or some editing prog? Those pics seem to be very red-biased. Are you working toward a PPL?

"Imboden Road is way off the airport property..""

Not exactly...it's outside the fence but still under DIA/TSA/PD control and jurisdiction. It extends outward quite a outside the fence line around the entire perimeter. A few of us were shown the map by the Police Dept. not long ago.

Eric,
It seems that when ever you post a date and time to go shoot, it rains. It's not lookin' good out there at the moment. My sprinklers are on a timer, maybe you could help me.... When are you planning to go next?  Big grin

Just kidding,... but it does look like rain...

Thanks Craig! That's pretty much why I posted the plug on here, to get constructive feedback. Though I do not have any cool editings programs, just iPicture. That will change soon, I hope. BTW what exactly is "red-biased"? How can you tell when a photo is "red-biased", and how can I correct the bias? As for my PPL, not yet, but I hope to start lessons with-in the next year! Any suggestions for CFI's?

My fault guys...I washed my car this morning. On my way home from work I hit a hit-n-run shower that was just enough to ruin the car wash...

I think my next car is going to be brown. So you can't see the dirt that shows up within minutes of washing it.

Ok, here's what happened. I tried to grab the shot, but instead, a series of tornados (yes, I'm dead serious), began chasing me. Needless to say, I couldn't get the shot, because I was running and scared shitless. I did however manage to grab several shots of some tornadoes in the vicinity of the airport.

Next time I decide to go spotting, I won't start a thread about it, maybe that's the problem.

Eric - put some shots up of tornados!

I finally got my license today, but am probably going out later next month because of a broken axel... I DON'T want to be stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere...

Vitaly,

I'm in the process of post-processing (wow what a mouthful) right now. I'll post the pics from Imagestation soon.

Yep, some pretty powerful microbursts and a nice dust devil, but I'm still not seeing tornadoes.

Jason - "red-biased" was just my word choice at the time. Lots of ways to fix it. Easiest would be white-point selection (with the eyedroppers in the curves adjustment in PS). I would bet that some simple hue adjustments, or color balance adjustments would work also. Also, I know a CFI who wouldn't mind a student in a bit. Hint: He's a CFI, name is Craig, instructs out of APA.  Big grin

Vitaly - Congrats! 'Nuf said. I don't really remember my life before my DL. Enjoy, and remember - Drive Fast and Take Chances.

Got a pretty good shot of Sky4 coming in while I was taking some photos of a club plane that had a tangle with a taxiway light on landing today. Hopefully I'll have time to upload it this weekend. Also had the Adams 500 taxi by, but the camera wasn't ready. I"ll see if I can recover that one to an a.net acceptable level. We'll see.

OK, so they were probably just dust-devils and microbursts, but at the time, I may have though differently  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

craig, how much are flight lessons running these days? I wanna fly, but college is coming on quick.
