Running Around Airports With A Rocket Launcher!

Fri Jun 04, 2004 3:56 pm

Heyhey all,
My folks are in the USA at the moment and I have a few opportunities for shopping as :
1) The dollar is still low against the Euro
2) My father can't tell the difference between a 100/400 f/4 L IS USM and a 70/200 f/4 L USM

Only downside is the weight...those of you using that equipment, is it a pain in the butt to carry around all day ?
And is the 70/200 f/2.8 L USM lighter ?

UTA, looking forward to the 10D.

For your wallet ? I kinda doubt it.

Will,

As you saw my 70-200/4L, it's not very big, actually it's really compact in size! Anyway, I'm really happy with it (AF speed, picture quality...) and of what I've heard from the 100-400/5.6L IS users, they are also happy with their lens. Now, I don't doubt at all one wouldn't be happy with a 70-200/2.8L (IS?)!

So ask yourself what are you after, more mm's or AF speed and quality and what can you afford?

200mm (with the 1.6x crop factor) should do it in DUB, unless if you want to start photograph aircraft bolts.  Laugh out loud

Here's a sample (a shameless plug  Big grin):

Will,

Bit of an irresponsible message title.

Getting a 10D? You D30 didnt last long  Wink/being sarcastic

The 70-200 f2.8 will be heavier than the f4 I presume and also it's not a problem carrying around heavy camera equipment at all, you soon get used to it.

Lighter than what?

I've never found the weight a problem, I now carry around a 70-200 f2.8 IS and a 300 f2.8. The latter is very heavy, but with a decent bag I have a Lowepro Trekker Photo Classic and a monopod it's not a problem.

The 70-200 f4 L is a nice light lens and does not compare to it's bigger brother or the 100-400 in terms of weight. I've owned all 3 and the heaviest is the 70-200 f2.8 IS. Check out the specs at one of Canon's websites.

Martin

Chris Sharps......nice pants almost as good as Wietse's (back in the old days)

When I read the header of this topic, I was more like thinking about

Whenever I am close to an airport, either the police shows up or I get asked a ton of questions by some strangers......I don't know how many times I was asked: Can I look thru????

It all depends what you want to achieve. If range is not an issue, clearly go with the 70-200. A lot more versitile than the 100-400. Weight with these lenses is not really a problem!
I carry about 15-30 lbs of equipment around, when going on trips. It is a pain to haul it around, but very rewarding when you come home and say, yes I produced some killer shots again!
---------------------------------
But be aware, if you buy equipment in the US, French customs duties and import taxes will be added to the price of the equipment, in case you will declare them.

I was at IFP and LAS the day after the rocket attack on that Israeli 757, with this 500mm monster. Yeah, I got arrested.

What type of huge lens is that AKE404? I bet it was expensive... :-|

If a plane just got shot down and I had my 600-1000 w/2x teleconvertor with me i'd be arrested too  Smile

Lenses like these will lead to arrests where I am...

Even using a tripod got me arrested...

Here's my newly acquired rocket launcher, of the 500mm variety. Woodland camo covers courtesy of the wife. And to the fella who asked who uses tripods... try handholding one of these for more than a minute and see what happens.
