I Walked Away With A Laugh

Mon Jun 07, 2004 3:58 pm

Photo © Sam Chui

This shot of mine have received almost 400 emails....

While 90% of the email are highly encouraging, a few of them are doubting the shot is real.

Here are a few links to some forum my shot was discussed at.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=8800372

One in Thai which I don't understand

http://www.thaiflight.com/nuke/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=39127#39127

and even one in Russian I lost the links.

I just want to say that, perhaps it is unfair to make a simple (and wrong)assumption or an very objective judgement regarding any photo without first consult the photographer.
Sometimes things happened beyond other's knowledge and one's imagination. Lot of things I see and know but the other's don't and vice versa.

Most emails accusing my photo being fake, also came with an unreturnable email address, so I wonder had they made up their mind 100% my photo's fake without hearing my stories? Why the email addresses were fake when people do this, sense of fear or guilt?

Finally, regard to that specific picture, why would one think its illegal or without permission flying over the aerospace, and if we don't get permission, I think we may get a close visit of the air force around the Cessna, and that will really be some real adventure and story making!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Perhaps sometimes there are many photos that are too good to tell they are real or fake but please email the photographer about your doubts before making a self judgement and post in a public forum, that you may prepare to humiliate yourself if you're wrong. For those fake emails I received, I simply just ignore them and had a few laugh with my mates.

Sam

P.S. I also have to admit people are over estimating my photoshop skills, I am quite a dummy on computer so I doubt I can make one like that in PS.

Man people are stupid, I want to create an account to have a little fun  Acting devilish . Remember they are camera buffs, not aviation.

I still get emails (some bad) about my SXM shots, it gets old. I had a website called museumofhoaxes.com use one.....oooh the stupidity that flowed there.  Big grin People telling me it was fake, the landing gear was only half way down. People would be deaf from being on that beach.....etc etc. I guess it's best to ignore them!

So much in this poor old world is a fake some people with problems in
trusting others jump at the conclusion great photos are manipulated fakes.
I'm more than happy to argument with them when I see their accusations
against a real photo.

Hello Sam,
As I told you in one of the 400 e-mails you got, I've flown that corridor with my uncle a couple of times in the past years.
I know this photo opportunity is real and there are so many other possibilities, like you I think air to air is the ultimate rush in aviation photography.

If I made to LA this summer I know I'll be flying that airway again but now I'll be in the Cessna with my 10D and the 100-400.
By showing us your work, and also the one from Derek Hellman and recently Brian Barlett at SNA new doors are being pushed.

Off course people from outside of the aviation photography, will always be the first to criticise the work of others, just because they cannot figure out how to achieve such a nice shot themselves.

Keep up the good work... and let the others loose their time in non constructive public criticism.

Sam,

Getting a little taste of your own medicine, and it's bitter isn't it?

Bottom line, I said it then and I say it now, if you've got nothing nice to say about someone else's shot, don't say it. Your critics should be mindful of that simple etiquette as you should have been when you openly criticised a particular shot of mine in a public forum.

*Peace*

Hi Terence,

Critics is always welcome for me, I have no problem receiving them and they are the driving force to improve, but to accuse a shot to be fake without any solid prove is a total different matter to me. I am quite comfortable with those emails I got, and I didn't get them just now, it was all weeks ago but I just thought to put up here today for some laugh, from a simple photo, making a lot of unnecessary noises, even charts and diagrams in foreign languages.

I think we all have the right to our opinions, what I said on your photograph is my rights, but accusing some photo to be fake with no grounds of prove is totally different.

Sam, it's a great photo and you have included information in the remark field on how it's shot. That is of high importance. I see other photos in the database that are bound to have people asking "how the heck did he shoot that" but without any info in the remark field. That will generate a lot of questions and doubts among viewers.

So guys, when you upload a rare shot like this one, always include as much information as possible about how you were able to shoot it.

Thanks,
Johan

Sam I don't know you but I got pissed when I read that forum on DPREVIEW. It is aggravating when you read someone passing judgment on something they do not have a clue about. I am sorry to read such garbage. I think there is some jealousy involved. Your picture is awesome as most of your photos are.....Stay Safe ....Artie

Sam - that was a great laugh.

I can't blame people unfamiliar with seeing these sorts of images of feeling skeptical initially or having doubts, but whats really ironic is it seems that the more some of those folks know about aviation/aircraft, cameras/photography, and photoshop etc, the further away they are from the truth.

What a great shot. Keep setting the standards....

As a registered forum member at dpreview.com I've added a nice comment, defending Sam's great work.

As long as people are willingly to be convinced a photo is real, I don't really mind but it's always better to contact the photographer first.

I just get annoyed of diehard scepticists who think everything new is fake. It's like one of the comments I read on the dpreview thread: 'every great photo is fake untill prover'. That's something I just don't get. Why can't those people just enjoy great photo's. It's good to have doubts, but a plain 'fake because it's a great photo' is way too far for me...

Sam,
"Your critics should be mindful of that simple etiquette as you should have been when you openly criticised a particular shot of mine in a public forum."

Not to shoot you down or anything but add the above with "what I said on your photograph is my right" means that you lack consideration of people as humans. Money talks, but remember, you're not the only photographer out there.

For your info... people got into trouble for your "modus operandi" in some places. I've received phone calls about your activities down here a few days ago... Some from airport authorities, some from staff, and some from fellow enthusiasts.

Some airport staff in SUB and DPS have asked me some unpleasant questions as part of an aftermath of your trip. Plus, I do not appreciate your comments on some of the photographers' work down here (which you said to me personally and isn't suitable to write here) while you write to them saying that their work is great in an email so you can get information out of them. That person wrote to me immediately after receiving your email...

Sure, your photography is great, but please, have a look at yourself beyond photography! Your trip here last year did not leave a good impression on local spotters and journalists on "foreign planespotters"...

The Thai one is especially funny. Since you can't understnad it, you cna only imagine wht was being said by the guy who went so far out of his way as to DRAW DIAGRAMS!!! Funny, how his diragrams only proved himself WRONG. lol

I mean, if you're going ot present ecidence about a picture being fake, at least make it point in the same direction that your argument goes in as well.

And I can attest to Sam's poor Photoshop skills.  Big grin haha

Gerry

I really don't understand and I don't want to drag into a dog fight here.

You said I recently visited SUB and DPS, the officer complainted and people were upset and phone call....etc but I didn't visit DPS at all, only SUB, and I have to paid the airport the right fee for photography, answer their questions, being nice and co-operative to all the officers, and have to present them copies of my photos as they demanded. What else I do to upset the staff, authorities and enthuasists, I didn't even see one enthusaists around so how can I possibly upset someone??? I will call back to Surabaya airport tomorrow to check because I would like to maintain a good relationship with the airport. Are you making all this up? Perhaps I know the reasons.

Furthermore, I have only sent 1 email to an Indonesian photographer, being diplomatic, I praise on one of his photo, it was really quite nice. I asked him a general question about a new airline in Indonesia and their ops/schedules, so what's wrong here?? Being nice to ask a question is not acceptable? If you call that I use people then I think this is very wrong.

I know I am not an easy person to deal with because I don't want to settle with only the second best and I write strong words at times, but I do the right thing at right time and to upset people is not on my wish at any time. I have been always think highly of you because of your great help of me last year, and that is the truth of what I feel about you.

I am not surprised when the chances come, the critics, the one who don't like me, the person who like to stir shits and the one have been jealoused all take a bite on me. There are always story from both side to tell and I can only take a laugh when someone accuses me all this...I know myself haven't done anything wrong to the others. Sorry at times my honesty can be quite insulting. I appologize for being inconsiderate at times. (which many of us all do). I do have my attitudes on things.

Apologies... maybe I should rephrase...

"Some airport staff in SUB and DPS have asked me some unpleasant questions as part of an aftermath of your tripS" (added an S there)... This time is only SUB? Hell, I don't know where you went. However, someone in the ground handling in DPS and SUB saw some of your pics online, they weren't happy... However, that's not to say that it's not allowed...

I know that here, you go through the proper channels for the access, and I've never said that you've done otherwise.

Perhaps one of the reason is that the airport authorities prefer dealing with foreigners... One journalist down here is screaming discrimination. Had quite a time calming him down! He shoved all the credentials required and the money, but still didn't get to what you got. He has since quit... so that part is gone at least. I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong or right. A number are frustrated. I'm not blaming you or the airport or them for the frustration.

The focus on what I wrote was the last 2 paragraphs in my first reply.

You're work is good, and yes, you never settle for second best, which at times can and does upset people. I know that's how you are. However, as I said, last year the impression wasn't very good. It's your right to ignore it, or act upon it.

Some others, well, they may dislike you, it's their right...

I think some of us here are just requesting for you to be a bit more polite (if it's the right word) on some of your comments... especially about other people's work.

Insignificant as it may sound, I still defend your work (especially those LAX shots from the VFR corridor)... however, when someone posted what you wrote... with some knowing on your opinions of his work... and then they ask me... "Are all foreign planespotters like him?" How the hell should I answer?

I'm going to stay away from most of this discussion (because I've never met Sam in person), but I do want to say one thing:

When the hell has Sam ever "bragged" about having money and traveling the world? I've been on this forum for about 5 years, and the only time I've seen Sam mention anything about it here is when he is directly asked.

So he has money. Good for him. People ask, and he's honest about it. What's the big deal?

Hmmm.

I feel the need to weigh in  Smile

I've hung out with Sam on numerous occasions, he has been a guest in my house on two trips, and I dont think I can find much fault in him as a person. I have heard Sam refer to other photog's as "clowns" but I have also heard him praise more photographers than "clowns."

Anytime Sam has come to my home he has brought wonderful gifts, and has been very thankful. He has given me some harsh feedback on some of my photos, but it has always been in a helpful way. He also has the results to back it up, it isn't arrogance, it's experience.

Sam is also very humble. I have never heard him brag about how much money he has, or where it comes from. I've met his family, they are the same way.

At any rate, Sam Chui is a class act. If you don't agree, thats fine. He's welcome in my home anytime.

N754PR,

I have yet to meet Sam Chui. I expect to meet him in LA next month at the convention there. so, I cna't back him up or agree with anythign negative said about him.

I dont knwo the basis of your beef with him, but I dont care. This message board is for aviaiton photographers to discuss aviaiton photography, bottom line. It is not the place for you to start your high school bickerings here. Keep that garbage in personal email.

Unless there is something about Sam that affects his photography in a way that affects all of us as a group, keep your negative attacks out of here, seriously.

I'm not a mod or screener or admin in anyway, but I have no tolerance for that. Not here.

Kindly,

I am aware the problem of local airport authorities unequal treatment to Indonesians and foreigners, it is quite unfair and sad really. But why you said someone in the ground handling saw my pic and not happy about, just because I got on the ramp and snapped a shot there?

I will try to be more polite in the future. Sorry if I had offended you in the past. I always have high regard of you because you helped me in a great deal previously.

Roastednutez,

What I wrote in my profile, is quite common here, a list of airport you done, a list of your camera equipment I use, I list of favourite airline, hobby etc....I can't believe even that you think i am bragging my wealth.

B777-700,

I can only took a laugh what you wrote, who are you? You don't know me at all. What you wrote here is only what you think on me, you wrote some very funny comments here about me. I am not going to fight with it coz most of my friends here can prove what a person I am. I don't like bragg about my wealth status, never do. I don't even know the real name in the profile that I am talking to. My attitude won't change, because I know I had treated all my friends well and deserved. Have you ever know how much help I gave to my friends, how much I care about them? No! You can't judge me from some posts I made here or just because I use strong words, I am intense but I am not what you wrote there.

Sheeesh what a load of crap is being spilled onto this forum.
I'll gladly see this thread locked now, this is just getting nasty.

For now let me step in:

Sure Sam is privileged, and yes he likes to talk about his trips. So freakin' what, like the rest of you don't like that.

Yes he probably is spoiled, very few of us can travel the world like he does. But him using people, come on. Photographers are there to help eachother out, be it with getting access, spending the night at eachothers house or having dinner there. maybe you don't have any buddies abroad and you're a little bit jealous yourself? Oh wait that's what this whole issue is about: JEALOUSY!

About him talking people down: I'm pretty sure we have all done that when hanging out at the airport with your mates. It's part of the fun, gossipping about other photogs, and not all that is being said is true.

I've only met Sam once so far, but I can honestly say I have only good things to say about him.

Now now...
I know Sam, and I know his use of words can easily be mistaken for something negative about his character. That's where we differ, but when I talk with him, what he brags about is what I brag about too. Sometimes he may go a bit too far, but for the most part, I let his photos do the talking for him. As much as our differences go, he's always welcomed at my place, because as as Clickhappy says, he has courtesy and humbleness when it comes to people he knows.... maybe it's "professional rivalry"...

I see him and his photo side as different, and I think the same is in vice-versa.

Yes, he's p1ssed me off in the past, and I'm sure I've p1ssed hm off too, but hey no one's perfect... This is about aviation photography, not about his character... unfortunately with Sam, the difference between the two is very thin coz he's so embedded in photography.

Sam,

"But why you said someone in the ground handling saw my pic and not happy about, just because I got on the ramp and snapped a shot there?"

Well, I guess so, it happened to me at PKU... and they were quite direct... unfortunately...

"I will try to be more polite in the future. Sorry if I had offended you in the past. I always have high regard of you because you helped me in a great deal previously."

Well Sam, sorry if I was a bit harsh with my words. I know you are who you are, the more politeness part was as a result of some comments I got from those you met briefly... not for me...

Some of the things that B777-700 is unfortunately true. I suspect some are just talk, and some are true. However, I always tell people, you and your photos are 2 separate things...

some people need to have thicker skin  Smile

Here is a true story. Last July Sam and I drove up to YVR and were hanging out with Rich, Rob, and Alan Ling. After 8 very long hours in the sun, Sam and I started arguing. Something about him having a larger head than me. Finally I snapped and asked him if he would like to earn a quick $20. He said sure, I opened my wallet and told him all he needed to do for the money was to "Shut the fcuk up."

But i'ts all good, its just a macho male testostrone thing (prob. why ExitRow doesn't get it, he's girlie). We were all friends at the end of the day, and eve had dinner at Panda Express to make Sam happy.

Huh? I'm girlie now?  Big grin

I think these fights are funny. Keep 'em coming. Very entertaining to read.

You want to talk about competition? Get into a press photo pit with 20 other press photographers all vying to get "the shot." That makes these sorts of panty-bunchings look like sandbox activities...

Carry on.

Hey Royal, wanna make a quick $20?

Sam, I really enjoyed your photo of the 747 on departure! I would love to be able and get a shot like that just once. I looked at the response that was written in Thai, my take, that person is jealous. Just my $ .02 worth haha. Hope to meet you at the AI2004 show in LAX.
