Most Popular Section.

Thu Jun 10, 2004 8:20 am

Hi I had a picture that was accepted last night around this time maybe a little earlier. It was climbing up the most popular of last 24/48 hours and made it to the second page. I notice tonight its gone from there and moved to the last 7 days. Does this section last only 24 hours?....Thanks Artie

I believe if you get screened before midnight, you stay up for 48 hours? Don't remember exactly how it works.

It seems pretty strange that each photo isn't autommatically removed 48 hrs after its upload time.
Creates a strange system where some photo's are up way longer than others and excellent photo's which deserve more viewing rapidly dissappear from sight while others remain.

The picture always stays in the 24-48hrs category for the rest of the upload day plus the whole next day.

So if it gets added just before midnight Swedish time 10.6.2004, it's there for just over 24 hrs. If it gets uploaded just past midnight Swedish time 10.6.2004, it's there for the whole day plus 11.6.2004.

So it's just luck when your picture gets added. But it's fair, as everyones uploads are treated the same way.

Hi Pete
Far from fair actually.
If mine gets uploaded at 2350 it stays in the 24-48 box for 24Hrs and 10mins yet yours is uploaded say 15mins later at 0005 stays on there for 47Hrs 50mins.
Fair??
What would stop haveing an auto system which deletes files from the 24-48 display based on upload time?

Hi Dehowie,

If mine gets uploaded at 2350 it stays in the 24-48 box for 24Hrs and 10mins yet yours is uploaded say 15mins later at 0005 stays on there for 47Hrs 50mins.

It works both ways, that's why it's a fair system.

If every photo stayed on for exactly 48 hours, which one would end up as photo of the day? Or we could just rename the category to the "photo of the day before yesterday, but it took this long to find out who won".

That's it - the way it works now is IMO the only way they can do it. Sometimes I think it is B***** when one of my personal favorites gets accepted just before midnight...Unlucky. I guess we have all had it both ways  Smile

I was thinking about if it would be better if all newly accepted pics were held and only released onto the site at midnight, so all new pics get equal viewing time.

Might overload the system, though.

I was thinking about this problem for a long while as well. And I came to the conclusion that Phils suggestion is pretty good. But that has a similar problem: How do you show the pics after midnight? the ones on the first page will get more exposure. Is it possible to show them at random? (the sequence in which they are shown)

Why is it called 24-48 hours? Wouldn't "last 48 hours" be better?

Oh no, not something else to moan about! Please! Who cares about hits - not me anymore, that's for sure!

The explanation is correct though - photos added just before Swedish midnight get just over 24 hours exposure in that view, photos added just after Swedish midnight get nearly 48 hours exposure in that view.

Fair? Yes, because sometimes you win, sometimes you loose. Adding everything at midnight would place a large inbalance on server and bandwidth loading and would be biased to hits on pictures from the parts of the world where prime viewing time is just after Swedish midnight.

Best thing you can do is not upset the screeners. Its interesting to screen at just before 11PM UK (which is just before Swedish midnight). If I'm processing pictures from a photographer who has upset us, then I'll get them processed real quick, but if its a nice guy I might just wait that few seconds until the hour hand ticks over Big grin

And I've been wondering why all my pics get added 1 second after midnight. I thought it was just an unlucky streak. Big grin

Come on guys, what's more fun than checking your upload statistics at 23.30, seeing you haveonly 15 photogs in front of you and just pray they will get accepted after midnight Big grin

It's fair now, like others have said: you win some you lose some. People are getting enough hits at A.net anyway Smile
Perhaps the system will change in the future but there are more important things to do for Johan.

Call me a Pollyanna, but I am grateful that my pictures are posted at all. A good photo is a good photo is a good photo, and A.net viewers make that distinction on their own.

An enthusiast takes the time to look at all the photos and choose which ones they want to hit. The good ones will always rise to the top no matter when they are uploaded.
