An-124 At DEN Tomorrow.

Thu Jun 10, 2004 3:23 pm

Ok, guys, here's the deal. Today, we already had Antonov 124; it sits at the usual spot, but it's faced North. The reason is, that on 06/10/04, we'll have both Volga Dnepr and Polet at the same time! I will be nailing them from the ramp; I hope you guys can make it out there and nail them both from outside. Oh, and by the way - Polet's registration is RA-82077, and Volga Dnepr is coming at around 10 am.

Question: Is Volga Dnepr the name of one specific AN-124? If that is the case then I have actually photographed it myself.  Smile

Just thought I'd point it out... Big grin

I assume these birds don't stay much more than one day if that?

Also - does anyone know why they seem to come in to DEN pretty consistently?

That must have been fun

Can't help but notice that the other guy looks like a younger unbadged brother? Looks like you guys had fun though!

I just watched it from the tower, taxi between B and C and takeoff on 34R. It rotated VERY early... Must have been empty or close to it.

Is that a lav truck Alex?

Indeed, it was my unbadged brother and we were near the lav truck. I kept threatening to put some rubber gloves on Vitaly's head  Big thumbs up, and yes, we did have a lot of fun. Pics will be in the queue shortly.

That is awesome you got to do that. Ive been out at the fuel farms a few times when 747s landed and it is amazing to be that close. Very fun stuff!

Did anyone give you a hard time and question you guys about being out there?

I'm jealous! Can't wait to see the pics! Too bad the queue is sooo long it will take weeks probably to get them through!

Tim,

We were escorted out there by a certain individual  Big grin, plus, I am badged, so it would have never been a big deal anyway. Now I'll know the schedule and post it for everyone in DEN to see!

Unbadged???

HAH! ...yeah, well, you guys are right...

It was kind of nerv-racking because of the possibility of being caught...

Oh well, I had fun, except for the nasty Lav truck gloves...

One of my pics came out FLAWLESS! That picture looks like it was taken with a nice 1,500 Camera (10D) and some L glass, none of that I have...

(I use a Sony F707)

Pics will be up as soon as the screeners get to them...

Well, as far as I know there is nothing wrong with you being escorted out there. As long as you are with your escort there shouldn't be a problem. Also as long as you don't cross the "active" line out there you are fine too.

The only time I have ever had any problems inside the fence was when Bush was here and when the F-16s were here last summmer. Other than that, if you are badged you should be fine as long as you dont get on the taxiways/runways.

The thing is though, as we all know, DIA has a way of changing the rules when they feel fit to do so.

Generally how long do the Volga Dnepr An-124's stay for?

There is one in Calgary right now, and I always miss them arriving and departing.

I got mine in the queueueueueueueueueueueueueue right now, so you'll guys see it in a while...

It was a nice combo of the sun, with a white body that gave us some cool reflections! SPOTLESS A/c as well...

Thanks Vitaly, can't wait to see those shots from where you were standing! I think I uploaded one of the landing shots, and one other. Personally, I would have preferred either a much earlier, or much later landing. 12 noon is about as bad as it gets light wise.... That is one spotless bird though.

The stats for the AN-124 and C-5:

Contractor: Antonov
Crew: Six
Length: 226 feet, 8 inches
Wingspan: 240 feet, 6 inches
Height: 68 feet, 2 inches

Contractor: Lockheed-Georgia Co.
Crew: Six
Length: 247 feet, 10 inches
Wingspan: 222 feet, 9 inches
Height: 65 feet

I was surprised to see the overal length of the C-5 was that much longer, and only 3 feet shorter, but that extra 9 feet on each wing helps a lot.

I was amazed at how quick it rotated. It was gone right around the 6000' mark. We were taking bets up here in the tower... I lost!

Tim,

Antonovs usually rotate early, but they climb kinda like A-340 on a hot day  Big grin. Anyway, I think Polet leaves on 16th; I'll try to get more info out of my contacts. Hope to see some more tower shots.

Great pics guys!

I think the DEN-SAN flight with the An-124 has something to do with ferrying defense equipment (something to do with rockets I think) from what I've heard...

Greg,

The flights don't come from SAN, they come from NZY. Just a friendly correction  Big grin.

The schedules on those things are awful unpredictable, last year RA-82077 sat around YQG for a whole week, only to depart within 15 minutes of another An-124 (that one from ADB), good times, good times... No Ruslans at YQG since.

I've heard that too, Greg. If you've seen Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore mentions that Lockheed Martin ships missile parts from their JeffCo plant to the airport at least once a month. I'm assuming this is at least one reason the An-124's come here...

I was on a United 733 taxiing to runway 25 when I saw this beast holding on runway 34R waiting for departure. Was a little after 4:00pm. Too bad the sun angle wasn't better...

Was that the Volga-Depner plane or the Polet plane Brick? I thought the Polet one was still in DEN - I am out of town until tommorrow so hopefully I can get a shot or two then...

It was the Volga-Depner one I saw departing off of 34R. At least I believe that's the one...sorry I don't know the Russian aircraft very well. I couldn't see a reg because it was backlit, but it was white with a blue strip down the side and up the tail.

We will have a visit from an Antonov 124 tomorrow here, and I think it'll be Volga Dnepr...

Volga Dnepr is a Cargo Airline. The Antonov An-124 is an aircraft...

Antonov design bureau has An-124s, so does Polet, and Volga Dnepr... As I believe some others do as well.

Those companies have a collection of An-124s... so it's not just 1 per Cargo airline.

An-124 is an aircraft... yeah thanks, I gathered that much...  Smile

Ok, then we had a Volga Dnepr An124-100 at the airport yesterday. I got a descent shot of it landing (Side shot hanging just over the rwy, taken from a slight elevation) But i am worried the pic could be a tad unsharp. I'll have to see when I get it off the camera onto my computer back home...

Anyways...  Smile

http://home.comcast.net/~jwckmiller/anetstuff/RA82081turnVertxxCustom.jpg Fantastic photo. A An124 is coming to Perth next week.
Imagine marshalling this beast in.. wow.

Biggest aircraft I've marshalled in was a BBJ. I'd be overwelmed doing an an-124.
