Opinions On The Canon 28-300 L Is Lens

Fri Jun 25, 2004 6:46 pm

Hi guys,

do you think the new Canon 28-300 L IS lens is any good for aviation photography. Is the quality comparable with the 100-400 L lens...

I almost bought a 100-400 L lens to replace my current 75-300 IS lens, but as I have also the 28-135 IS lens I really like the idea of the 28-300 which mean that I don't have to change lenses anymore (reduce the risk of sensor dust).

Any opinions or experiences with that lens? I know is more expensive than the 100-400.

As always, thanks for your help in advance.  Big grin

Greetings
Tobi

I am very interested in that lens too, I am not sure if it's out on the market here in Sweden yet but I really hope so.
It's a great range for aviation photography, especially at airports like
AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and AMS.

I would spend some time researching this lens over at the DPReview Canon SLR lens forum: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1029

There are many helpful and knowledgable people there, but most seem interested in flowers, birds, and insects rather than our beloved heavy metal.  Smile

The sample i tested was soft and suffered from chromatic aberration. 100-400 is of a much higher quality than this! This lens is pretty much designed for travel photographers who shoot in harsh condition and cant afford to change lenses a lot!

It is nowhere near as sharp as a 100-400/70-200! Very overpriced also! I would only get this if it was priced at £500ish.

Now that you mention it Chris, I remember reading of other peoples CA problems with this lens. Some complained of it's softness as well.
